85920 2002-10-04 00:36:00 hello,

at the moment me and Jimmy D (from TNT2 meg problem) are trying to network our computers .

but we are not successful we have used your FAQ 42 - How to network computers . it has proven unsuccessful .

Jimmy D can see me in network neighborhood, see my computer .

but cannot access it, or ping me . my firewall has been disabled . all the settings that are required there .

when we try pinging each other it says request timed out .

so we figured maybe the crossover cable we have is faulty so we bought a new one . still only Jimmy D can see me .

now one thing we are curious about is that my Belkin F5d500 card shows both lights turned on at all times . link and active . so now im wondering whether it is a faulty card . but at the moment my computer still has a warrantee and i cannot open it up and check things out .

we are both wondering 98 se .

Jimmy D has a realtech network card or something .

i am yet to call my local computer service center to see why the network card would be showing both lights on .

maybe it is that PCI slot 1 interferring with AGP? but the network card looks like it is in slot 4 .

so any help or response would be good .

85921 2002-10-04 04:01:00 If one computer can see the other, your cable(s) and netwiork cards are probably OK . It's probably a setup problem .

Is one or both using Windows XP, 2000, or NT . . . I think all of these need to have a user set up for each other computer to be "seen" .

Stream of consciousness:
You need "Microsoft Network Client" enabled . . . TCP/IP installed, Workgroup name the same, and computer names different . . . IP addresses in the same network (say 192 . 168 . 0 . 1 and 192 . 168 . 0 . 2 would be OK) . But if your friend's box can see yours, the IP addrresses are OK . . . so it might be just the security thing . . . Though ping ought to work, even so . The card with both lights on could be that computer trying very hard to find a network . Tryt unplugging the cable, and seeing what happens .

I'd be inclined to uninstall on both machines, then install again .

Networks are fun . There's no such thing as a network which nearly works . :_| It has to be exactly right .

85922 2002-10-04 04:12:00 If you can see computers but can't access them 2 thoughts spring to mind:
- File sharing
- Logins

Check in Control Panel that sharing is enabled then go to Windows Explorer and share a folder (sharing root is a Very Bad Idea. Only share what you need to).

Are either of you pressing "cancel" at the login screen? This can prevent your seeing things.

85923 2002-10-04 04:53:00 Try:
Ping *UserPC*
Replace *UserPC* For your friends PC's "Name"
Also, try assigning one as:
192.168.0.1
and let the other auto-Assign itself.

Hope that helps

85924 2002-10-04 05:18:00 First try the comments mentioned above.
If that doesn't work, go into the network properties of your cards. THen look at the duplex settings, put them down to 10/full
Do this to both computers and see if it works

I think your card could be faulty though, If that Activity light is always on, it might mean that no information is getting into your computer and hence the time outs

Not true :) We had a problem the other day. 2 PC's.

PC one could see, ping and access PC 2's shared drives. File copying, etc was OK (ie functioning normally).

PC 2 could see PC one in workgroup, and could ping PC one, but double clicking on PC one's icon in the workgroup gave a path not valid message (like a network shortcut when the network is disabled).

Both PC's seemingly set up correctly.

Hook PC two to PC three instead using same x-over cable, and network functions correctly, thus must be a prob with PC one, but what???

PC one and 3 = XP Pro.
PC2 = XP home.

(don't worry if answer is not obvious as we no longer need those PC's networked, and Beef needs his question answered).
