85836 2002-10-03 21:36:00 How do you get apps like Paint, Word Pad, etc to install when the PC has Win ME and a recovery disk instead of a Windows ME disk?

In my Win98 if Paint isn't installed I can go to Add/Remove Programs, put my Win98 CD in the drive and it will install Paint. But if all you have is a recovery disk how is it done then?

We are talking about a PC Co machine here.

85837 2002-10-03 21:46:00 I always understood that a recovery disc just restored the comp to what is was when new. If paint etc was not there in the first place, it won't be on the disc.

85838 2002-10-03 21:49:00 Susan,

I'm not too sure about PC Co disks, but my brother had an IBM laptop and a recovery CD, and it copied the installation to his hard drive, so that if he wanted to add a Windows program he just went into add/remove, setup tab, and add the program, and it'd install from wherever it was hiding on the HDD. So it might be worth just trying that?

Other than that, I have no experience with recovery CDs :) I've never had one to use.

Mike.

85839 2002-10-03 21:50:00 Any systems I have seen with recovery disks, have the windows cab files extracted to the HDD as part of the recovery disk process.

Then you get the apps just as you would from the cab files on a CD.

85840 2002-10-03 21:50:00 It's possible that they are in fact installed - check by going Start | Find etc and search for mspaint.exe and wordpad.exe. If not, perhaps you can borrow a CD, either Win 98 or ME. Greg S (201)
85841 2002-10-03 21:59:00 OK, well it's Charlie (pressf1.co.nz) that I'm trying to help - he's trying to install Paint and I've reached the brick wall since I haven't any experience with his kind of system.

If anyone has any advice for him, can you post it in his thread for him please? We can't let him down.

85842 2002-10-04 05:31:00 Hello Susan,

A easy fix, ME by default loads a copy of the OS into the following directory C:\windows\options then either cabs or install.

More importantly the correct way to extract mspaint or for that matter any other required file, is to do the following >> click on start >> run >> type in msconfig >> click OK >> click on the extract file box >> type in mspaint.exe >> click on start >> at the next pop up box, browse to the C:\windows\ options\ ** folder, type in or browse to where you want the file extracted to (default is C:\windows, although you can save it anywhere, as it's an exe it will start from any location.

Regards
Alan
