85634 2002-10-03 02:41:00 I know I've seen the question here before, but I couldn't track down the answers. I am running 98SE on a PIII. My icons refuse to sit in the same place each time I boot up, and will set themselves in two or three different layouts while the desktop is loading Office Pro, AGV and Zone Alarm.
I would also like to consider the merits of upgrading my OS but get conflicting reports on Win2000, ME and XP depending on who is selling them.
Would welcome comments.

85635 2002-10-03 03:28:00 First, a question about your icons. Do they move when you move the mouse pointer over them, or do they just end up in some random place and stay there? If they move around from the mouse pointer, it could be the Magistr. virus.

Secondly, on OS upgrading, ME wouldn't really be a step up, its just a more up-to-date version of Win 98, and not much point going to it if you're actually looking to "Upgrade".

Win XP and 2000 are fairly similar in operation, XP though is designed to look better, and has some features that supposedly make it work better. If you're wanting to upgrade, XP may be the way to go, as this is the most recent, and more and more software is being made for XP, and one day you may only be able to buy software for XP (like you cannot anymore buy software for Win 3.x, and very little software for Win 95).

I went from ME to XP, and although I really liked ME, I wouldn't go back now, XP just seems to work better, faster (noticably), and is far more stable (very very very rarely will crash).

85636 2002-10-03 21:37:00 Thank you Mike, for your indepth reply on the OS. As I said before, the only fair assessment is usually from a user. I have learnt through bitter cost not to take as gospel the claims of those who sell the product.

As far as the icons are concerned, not a mouse stimulation. My system is heavily guarded against viruses (or is that virii?), and I only got the problem after re-installing my external Iomega Zip drive. I suspect a double up in the configuration files in C:\ and maybe the only fix is to clean out and reinstall the OS. (I do this periocally as an exercise in masochism).

I will keep plugging on.
Cheers,
Ken
