I have seen a program somewhere that lets you extract them in windows - I think it might also let you make them. What do you mean by untarring them in a webserver? You'd need the program to untar them installed on the server. Usually you'd just install the files straight onto the server. Mike.	Mike (15)
86103	2002-10-05 03:50:00	"tar --help" or "man tar" will tell you (... in *nix). I very seldom make them, so don't bother to remember the details. ;-) The z option (not Z) will do a gzip compression, the "f" option if used must be the last option and is followed immediately by the name of the tarball file. If you use compression the filename convention is to end with ".tgz", or ".tar.gz" if gzip compression is used. "tar tvzf file.tgz" will "test" the file, and tell you what it contains. "tar xvzf file.tgz" will extract and decompress the archive ... tar is so venerable that it uses non standard (and non-POSIX) option syntax though most versions also accept the "-xvzf"or even "-x -v -z -f" forms. I'm not sure, but I have n idea that WinZip will extract tarred files ... otherwise there are DOS versions of tar and gzip. They will work much the same. If you are moving files to or from DOS you will want to have "todos" or some other utility to handle the line end of text files. You will find these on Simtel.	Graham L (2)
86104	2002-10-05 03:55:00	Oops, I forgot what you were asking about the web server (and had used Reply on Mike's posting) . . . I assume you mean that you are at home and want to ftp a tarball up to a web host . Unless you have an account which gives you Telnet access, so you can log on and run tar yourself (on a *nix) system, you would need to arrange with a system adminsitrator to do this . I'm pretty sure that most "free web" will servers expect you to load your content uncompressed . . .	Graham L (2)

86110	2002-10-07 02:15:00	The Simtel archive used to be in the middle of a desert (White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico) . Now it's hosted "somewhere" . I usually get the files from the English universities' mirror site, but this should get you to the msdos area (ftp://ftp . simtel . net/pub/simtelnet/msdos/) . From there, cd compress directory and get gzip124 . zip . Then "cd . . " and cd arcers directory and get pdtar . zip, tar . zip, tar4dos . zip (to get a choice) . cd . . and cd txtutl for one of crlf . zip (etc) which handle the cr/lf (dos) and lf (*nix)line terminators . There's a lot of good stuff at Simtel . You will notice the small file sizes . The few big packages are broken up so that each section will; fit on a 320kB 5 . 25" floppy . ;-)	Graham L (2)
