86068 2002-10-04 13:37:00 Hi, um, I think my left sound channel has died.
I have two instances of win98se installed and this problem affects both of them, they happen to use different versions of the sound driver too. I have tested two different sets of speakers, and neither output a left sound channel. I've check the balance on the systray volume control, and when I shift it all the way to the left no sound comes out, but all the way to the right there is sound.
EEEEKKKKKKKKK!!! What's happened?
Please help me.

As I said, win98se, and win98se(98lite), via integrated (ac 97) sound on a gigabyte motherboard.

Would this be a hardware prob? I'm positive that there USED to be a left channel, coz I was working on a music video clip and I noticed that something wasn't right, as in sound missing that used to be there....

86069 2002-10-04 20:42:00 you could try re-installing the drivers ,and if that dont work, invest in a creative live sound card. all you need to do then is disable the o/b sound in the bios and your back in business (with better sound). no i dont work for creative either.... baldynz (1853)
86070 2002-10-04 21:57:00 Could be a dead speaker. Try another one.. SoniKalien (792)
86071 2002-10-05 00:29:00 Unlikely to be a dead speaker Sonik, as he has tried another set.

More likely to have killed the onboard channel amp. PCI sound card is easy option.

86072 2002-10-05 00:42:00 just one small thing to add. check the actual media player program you use to see you havn't changed the balance setting. also the startup sounds would only be on one speaker. tweak'e (174)

What's "onboard channel amp".

The wife's pc sound has also died, Genius sound card under 12 months old.

Un-installed, un-installed MS Media etc and re-installed.

Win95B.

Any replies appreciated.

86074 2002-10-05 04:24:00 the only reason why i might get a problem like that is if im using an extension cable for the sound.

cause when i use the extension and then plug in headphones and switch it the left it no work. or to the right it no work.

or on a double plug. but when i plug my head directly into the motherboard i get both ears left and right.

86075 2002-10-05 04:51:00 On board channel amp.

Your sound card is probably not a "card" as such, but a series of components permanently attached (soldered onto) the motherboard

Thats what "on board" means.

Channel Amp = amplifier (also on board) to drive the speakers. Left and Right channels

IF one cannel amp HAS has died, its terminal. Its uneconomic to try and replace components on the motherboard, not designed for repair.

Its more economic to buy a plug-in sound card. To do so you need to find how to disable on-board sound though, cant have them both active. The manual for your motherboard will tell you how.
If you don't have a manual, look on your motherboard for the name and model and get one off the internet.

Please describe how your speakers connect. If they are plugging into a lead out the back of the PC, perhaps that lead is faulty? Often soundcards have one stereo socket into which a lead plugs into, which then has 2 sockets for the speakers. If this is the case, don't blame the PC until you have the lead tested.

86076 2002-10-05 06:02:00 A friend of mine had a similar problem, his ended up being a hardware fault, the output socket on the intergrated sound was dodgy. Archibald (180)
86077 2002-10-05 06:19:00 tweak'e: not a media player prob, I'm sure of that. I'll check the start up sound next time.

sonik: definitely not a speaker prob

baldynz: I've checked the drivers, no help. I was thinking of getting creative live or something anyways...

beef: maybe your double plug is the wrong kind and it separates the channels...

everyone: thanks ;)
