85990 2002-10-04 05:50:00 Does anyone know how to make my W2000 partition of my dual boot (with W98SE) bootable again, as I had to reinstall W98SE which over wrote the 2000 boot files. I have tried booting to the 2000 CD & repairing an installation with ER process but I haven't got an emergency repair disk, so 2000 won't repair it. Also I thought of trying the FIXBOOT CMD in R.console but I read that it would stuff up the ability to boot into my W98SE partition.Thanks. quackle (2097)
85991 2002-10-04 06:14:00 I don't know if this will work, but it's probably worth a read of its documentation: XOSL boot manager (http://www.xosl.org/).

As you have discovered, the order of installing different flavours of Windows matters.

85992 2002-10-04 06:30:00 One more attempt.

The original option.
The Fixboot command will restore the ablity to boot into 2000 and remove the ability to boot into 98

To boot into 98 via the Windows 2000 boot options menu, the boot.ini file in 2000 must be modified.

All the details of how to do this are in the previous thread.

Another option is to install a third party boot loader and configure that.

A third option is to now reinstall Windows 2000.

A fourth option is to get someone else to do it.

A fifth option is to explain how the drive(s) is/are partitioned, where each operating sytem was/is installed and what each partition/logical drive was/is formated.

85993 2002-10-04 06:46:00 W98 is installed in the primary partition ( C:) & Formatted as FAT32. W2000 is installed on the only Logical drive on the extended Partition (D:) & Formatted as NTFS. I wont to be able to boot into both OS's. Sorry if I caused confusion on my earlier post I was qouting someone elses post in reference to FIXBOOT. quackle (2097)
85994 2002-10-04 08:38:00 That explains a lot.

The quickest option - for you - is to install Windows 2000 again onto the logical drive - the D drive as the installation setup will label it.

To retain data existing on the logical drive, follow these instructions.

The differences between when you did it first and this time will be:
1. Change BIOS settings to boot off the CD ROM drive first, then C and then A (this assumes using a bootable CD of 2000)
2. Boot off the CD
3. Alter the installation directory from D:\Wiinnt to D:\winnt1
4. Leave the logical drive (D:) and do not format nor alter the format type.
This will recreate the required Windows 2000 system files on the boot partition (C:) while installing the operating system boot file on the system partition (D:)
5. Change BIOS back to the original boot order.

Go here (www.bytamin-c.com) to learn how to create an NTFS boot disk to alleviate your present problem.

If you retain the new installation, all the application software will have to be reinstalled.

At a later stage backup critical data, remove all references to Windows 2000 on the D: drive, delete the system files in the C drive and do a clean install.
