86323 2002-10-05 10:31:00 I have Outlook Express on my computer and i use it...have ever since i got winxp...but i now have Office XP on CD...and have installed word/excel/powerpoint but not outlook, as i am not sure if i should...do anyone recommend it...and is it any difference? or is it better?... csinclair83 (200)
86324 2002-10-05 10:37:00 You can still install it, as it's a completely seperate program from OE, and so it wouldn't overwrite anything. You could try it while still using OE and see which one you prefer. It's a lot bigger than OE, but I prefer it to OE, it does a lot more stuff, not just emails. I haven't used OE for emails since I first got Outlook, and I wouldn't go back :)

But try it out for a while and see what you think.

86325 2002-10-05 11:37:00 I agree, Outlook is good. Outlook Express annoyed me to the point that I now use Eudora, I found OE a bit obtuse for a simple e-mail program.

Eudora is very effective, easy to back up, stores all attachments separately and its also not targeted by as many virus as MS apps.

Outlook is a complete calendar/diary/contact manager/e-mail/ application that I actually find simpler to use than OE, but nowhere near as straightforward as Eudora.

86326 2002-10-05 11:40:00 Outlook is geared more for businesses as it is closely integrated with Office.

If you don't work/run an office you are probably better off with Outlook Express.

86327 2002-10-05 11:47:00 I disagree, Susan. you're right, Outlook is geared at businesses, but I wouldn't personally recommend OE over outlook just cause one's a home user - I find Outlook far better than OE, and I'm only a home user :)

86328 2002-10-05 12:08:00 I also changed to Outlook after getting Office XP. At first I was a bit daunted by the amount of things that can be done compared to OE. I agree with Susan that it is geared towards business use, however it still does the basics. To be honest I would use less than 20% of the available features on Outlook but I liken it to cars. All cars will get you from A to B however I would rather take that journey in an HSV than a mini.

86329 2002-10-06 03:19:00 Each to his own: Chris will obviously have to try Outlook and see if it suits him or whether he prefers OE. :-)

OE suits me because I am able to access my Hotmail accounts through it rather than have to use the web-based Hotmail. Much quicker and far less hassle and as far as I'm aware Outlook can't do that.

86330 2002-10-06 04:04:00 WOW! theres alot of different stories here...

i been told...OE is best for simple uses..
Outlook xp is best for advanced uses..

and that both can use hotmail and ur local isp (.co.nz) email address as well..without any hassles...i dont really care coz i dont use the "spam infected" hotmail any more...

I'm gonna give outlook xp a try...and see what happens...

86331 2002-10-06 05:53:00 Outlook can check Hotmail, but I agree that OE is far quicker and uses less resources. I just like having the extra features with Outlook just in case. sam m (517)

I find Outlook to be quicker than OE - both in loading (I guess cause I've got Office in my startup folder) and in checking hotmail (although I don't use hotmail anymore). I've never tested for resources between the two, but I don't think Outlook uses much anyway.

Okay just tested Outlook - it sits between 0 and 1 when not doing anything, and goes only as high as 7% when checking email. Not bad. Just also tested Outlook Express - it also sits on 0-1% while idle, but hits 57% when checking mail. I think from that I'd prefer to use Outlook :)
