1316482 2012-12-04 21:48:00 I arranged with ORCON to change my plan. As I understand it they will call and instal a new plug and supply me with a new modem. (GEM. Never heard of it.Is it any good?) She asked if I wanted a hand piece with it. Not knowing what she was talking about I said NO.Now I'm wondering. At present I have a conventional phone jack. Will my mobile phone fit in anywhere?
It has dawned on me that I am being connected to the new broadband cable. Supposed to be faster. I download at 1.5 MBPS at present which is fast enough for me. I changed because I like the price. About $50 a month cheaper.
I have four jackpoints. Will the other three still work? I have a medic alarm on one of them. The other two are not used.
Would the handpiece she was talking about be a replacement for my phone?
The woman I was dealing with sounded like an asiatic of some sort which is why I didn't ask for more information.
Basicly what I want to know is should I ring back and say I want the handpiece.
Thanks
Jack

1316483 2012-12-04 22:17:00 GEM is the Genius and basically you are going naked DSL when using it as it runs the phone as VoIP (Chill can give many more details on this)
I do not know if a normal phone is supposed to work with these but I could never get my old cordless running through the Genius I have.

The hand piece is just a phone that works over VoIP, if you do not take one you will have to buy one of your own.

Now I am not 100% but I am pretty sure that the other jacks turn off, you no longer have a conventional phone line they are all "data only"

I find Genius to work well and the VoIP phone is fine.

Best you talk to them first, the alarm may be an issue.

1316485 2012-12-04 22:47:00 No, the Medic Alarm will need to go into the specific phone port on the router itself. Most are happy, but this is something you should double-check with the medic alarm company (Not Orcon, they won't know, there's hundreds of different medic alarms and they can't be expected to know every single one that works or doesn't).

The other jackpoints around the home will no longer have a "phone signal" coming to them, everything will have to be from the router. As DeSade mentioned, they're not technically "turned off" but you won't get regular phone signal down them.

It's probably *easiest* if you ring back and say Yes. It'll be a cordless phone that plugs into the router to charge and things, leaving the "phone" port on the router free for your medic alarm to be plugged into. You can always plug in a phone double adapter to the modem to use more than one device if you need.

Basically, it's the difference between their Genius and Genius Lite. The Genius Lite has no cordless phone attached to the side of it. The Genius does.

Yes, she's from Manilla in the Philippines. I've dealt with them a TON lately and their first level support is horrible to the point it makes Telstraclear look like a saint (Yeah, they're that bad!).

1316486 2012-12-05 00:58:00 Well, thanks, I know a lot more than I did this morning.
I've ordered the one with the phone and am now waiting for a few days 'till it's installed.
Just hope I get a Kiwi to do the install.

1316487 2012-12-05 01:03:00 "Do the install"?

What'll happen is nobody will come to your house, rather they'll have a Chorus technician make some changes for you down at your local Exchange or Cabinet.

From there, you'll lose internet for a couple of hours. Orcon will then ring you and say "Heeeeeey we've changed you over, isn't that awesome? Plug in your modem now"
You then plug in the Genius router, it takes a few minutes the first time it fires up because it downloads all your VoIP phone settings from Orcon, and then magically it all just works. No passwords, no settings, no nothing, it "Just works" :)

And it ACTUALLY does :)

1316489 2012-12-05 02:30:00 If I understand correctly it's possibly to rewire your house wiring to feed the jackpoints from the router. By default the jackpoints will no longer function as mentionend.
If the router converts the VOIP signal over DSL to a standard 2 Wire phone signal on it's output than any telepermitted device "should" work but as chill mentioned best to check with your alarm company.

Except when it doesn't....... :) My set up took a while to settle down, kept getting disconnected, and had to phone Orcon via cell phone , a real bloke fortunately in Auckland who fiddled with my Genius remotely and reset things.

Sometimes the connection is lost, and sometimes a reboot is required, but that is no different to most ADSL connections.

I had a splitter in the loft, and found it best to have this disconnected entirely from the phone line, but I can't remember exactly why now.

However, there have been no problems now for a very long time.

1316491 2012-12-05 05:58:00 All of the above seem to me to be valid reasons to stay well away from VOIP systems if you want more than one operating phone and have other essential services that use your phone line.

Sounds OK for a single or two phone installation in a plain vanilla situation, but personally speaking I wouldn't touch it with a forty-foot pole.

I like the dependability and reliability of my current service, that works during power cuts etc, which I doubt would be the case if there is a modem involved.

Cheers
