1291959 2012-07-31 23:07:00 I have just looked up our Tasman District Council rates for the coming year around Rural Wakefield. Again they have pulled the wool over our eyes. I have looked at several properties and all are showing a MASSIVE 21% overall increase.:annoyed::annoyed::annoyed::annoyed::anno yed: Time to revolt I think. How can those of us on fixed incomes keep this up????? Arnie (6624)
1291960 2012-07-31 23:09:00 21%??? That's huge for anyone, let alone those on fixed incomes. Nick G (16709)

1291962 2012-07-31 23:28:00 Ours are going up in Nelson too but not by that amount I think 5.6% has been touted, mainly due to the council spending vast sums on artworks commisioned from overseas and then accepting a gift of $2.5million for a sculpture that most are opposed to and then spending rates money on the art gallery. I want to know why they can't use the sculpture money for the arts centre. It's got so bad we are leaving and going to rent the house out gary67 (56)
1291963 2012-08-01 00:27:00 New plymouth district peaked to 14% a few years back. But 21% is horrendous. What is the reason for the increases??

EDIT: remember some can get rebates if struggling to pay rates, not sure of the criteria tho

6.6% General Rates the rest is increases in add ons like drainage, special buildings like swimming pools etc that Councils try to say are not rates, but are in our rates bill. Rebates are available, income related but that has been available for several years, but the increase is still 21%. We get the rebate, available all over NZ. I see Len Brown says only around 35% of eligible rate payers claim it. Check Yours!!!!!!!!

Wait until you get your next water bill. The super shity was supposed to save money but it looks like a case "It's not our money so lets spend it" If the councils in the US tried this they would be taken to court.. Over there they have to live within their means. They do have rate revolts over there..

Unfortunately, almost all of NZ is on fixed income.
No real pay rises anymore for most of us; but rates, power bills, food, petrol prices just keep going up.
Its getting to the stage where many simply cant afford to live in NZ (& therefore go to Aus)

It must be especially hard for those on a pension.
Remember Helen Clarkes response to those who couldnt afford to pay rates
At least National are making noises about trying to get rates under control, yet to see any real action on this.

I think those in AK would be horrifed to see what the rates bill should be , all that council borrowing has to eventually be paid back.
Unsurprisingly, Ak council has had its Credit rating downgraded due to its out of control borrowing/debts
Proposed rail loop to be paid for when/how ??

What should happen (but wont)
In Ak : Inherited (excessive) debt from particular old council regions : should be paid off with rates rises in that region , rather than all of Ak pay for that regions stupidity.

Got your bill yet?
Mine was $1946, so let's deduct off the waste water which now goes to watercare. Council now tells me the rates are $1402. Funny, that seems to be the amount less water - what happened to the actual Super City decrease? Oh yeah, 3 year transition period. Still, what about this years transition?

It's also taken me 3 weeks to actually get this much out of them.

I don't get sent a bill because I am in credit. never mind watercare can send me one when I'm in credit, Telecom can send me one when I'm in credit, everyone except the council.

And I tried online - signed up for igovt, get to the end and oh sorry, you're Waitakere so you can't view it online.

Fine, accounts can send me a statement right? Well no. They said I was $523 in credit. I reckoned $23. Why? Because of what I paid in the lat two years, their 2 bills they did send originally and then $1946 / 12 which is how I pay them.

But no....all I got was a list of payments I had made, that's not a proper statement, I know what I paid, I wanted to know how they arrived at $523. But can't get a straight answer.

and of course even after getting them to refund this $500, I am still in credit so no bills.

No, I don't want to wait for a bill, I'd rather pay as I go instead of receiving this whacking great bill all at once, can't afford that sort of thing.

Council drives you nuts....
