1316103 2012-12-06 08:59:00 Ok . Go here http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/ and install Classic Start menu. I did it to my Win 8 partition in my laptop at work and it works fine. Also did it to the Win 7 partition as well..
Thanks for that Paul will pass it on to boy when he comes back from school camp. The computer is still unopened in its box. Be a surprise for the boy when he comes home.

1316104 2012-12-06 09:27:00 Samsung Lappys are generally hard to find down here in Wellington. I have only seen one.

However you could get your son a Samsung Chromebook for much less than the cost of the laptops these days, but you need to remember that with the recent advent of Windows 8 the lappys you see in the circulars, generally have a lower clock speed than their Windows 7 brethren, and smaller HDD/SDDs, but go for premium pricing. You must also remember that if he is going to use Windows as his chosen OS, it is recommended that you get a Lapppy with a touch screen or a hybrid, such as the Surface RT; or Surface Pro, but I wouldn't recommend it, as the Surface Pro's going price is apparently going to be more than the MacBook Air.

If your son hates W8, you'll have to factor in the cost of Windows 7, or a free Linux Distro, when browsing for a lappy to get the most out of your money.

Yet, if you really are desperate, build him a desktop.

I would also like to point out that Toshiba is a well respected brand among that of the general enterprise and home users because of their durability.
However I have managed to eke out seven-eight years out of my Lappy, which is an Acer, but nowdays the general reliability of Acer has fallen in recent times...
I am running Windows 7 on this ancient Lappy!

As 1101 said you have to factor in the worth of your 4 year old Lappy.

1316105 2012-12-06 09:37:00 Given chromebooks are net reliant and won't support windows apps then I'd not be *hugely* keen on them, although if the Internet is stable + fast and it seems like he can do all his work via web apps then it should be fine. Agree however that if you are going win8, get a hybrid surface like table OR something similar to the Lenovo Yoga (www.slashgear.com)

If you go win7 then most decent brands *should* do
