1291369 2012-07-29 08:22:00 In regard to a few people I have tried teaching, those of whom have never used computers in their lives or their jobs .. nor text messages on cellphones.

I can see that the pads - apple or androids can be less intimidating.
It's small. Like Lakewoodlady says, they just want to write some emails and read the news. The ones that I have known, don't even want to do shopping online, they were hesitant about banking but considered it because it was cheaper esp if they have a overseas EFTPOS card, doing a ATM action each time can be costly.

They keyboard can be intimidating. What are all the buttons for? When it's all on screen, it's just about pressing that and that and then suddently the screen keyboard pops up ... oh .. I 'll just type my email. It's also easier to set up without all the cables. Maybe companies introduced colored cable/connections for a reason and manufacturer tailored software that "guides" the customer. And likewise with the software, how you may have advanced method but you have profiles set up, ie., printing, how they ask you what you planning to print (letter, photocopy, business chart, photo, banner) and it just guides you from start to end.

I can also see that pads would be more popular even for IT equipped Joe/Jane.
It's generally cheaper than a laptop / desktop.
It's more portable. They may take it out more with them when they go out.
It's smaller, and fashionable.
It does what most people want that is average Joe / Jane. Email, web, shopping, facebook, twitter.

Apart from students and that work laptop, many people probably seldom use MS Office even if it is provided on the Netbooks (starter version).
Of course gamers would still get a desktop. Many would not accept a laptop.

1291370 2012-07-29 08:28:00 Some considerations -
Smart phones - Many people - of all ages - don't have a need for this new technology because they carry a mobile phone so that they can call relatives if they have an emergency. These people are on prepay and probably pay $20 p.a.
A laptop or desktop is easier for many because it has a "proper" keyboard.
Despite all the advertising hype there are still many people who either can't afford or don't really NEED the latest and greatest.

1291371 2012-07-29 09:51:00 We have 2 desktops, a laptop and a tablet. The tablet is the least used computer in the house, closely followed by the laptop. They only really get used when we go away, nearly everything is done on the dekstops as we soo much prefer decent screen real estate and our home office is near the fire. We don't have smart phones because we simply have no use for the features they offer. We both use cheap Nokia's with no camera just phone and text capabilities.

We have both thought about smart phones and can't justify the cost

1291372 2012-07-29 10:06:00 If "fashionable" is high on the must-have list, then an iPad is the very thing. It has another great advantage: in this case you will only be wasting bad money ;) R2x1 (4628)
1291373 2012-07-29 10:24:00 I have a smartphone, a year old tablet and a four year old laptop. I use all these devices every day, but I am finding that the tablet is getting used more and more, usually while sitting in front of the TV. The scary thing is that I am starting to try to touch the screen of the laptop to try to do stuff!!! johcar (6283)

That mad dog Steve Ballmer. He wants us to go all touchy feely. It is not going to happen except with anything under 10".
