The only advantage the younger generation have is that they have been using technology for longer because of the age of their parents.
They did a survey a number of years ago where they introduced various age groups to a new piece of tech and they were most surprised when it showed that age didn't matter to how it was mastered. So you can take from that what you want and I stand by what I said. We all have to learn to do some things at some stage. A lot of the older generation have only started using PC's in the last few years whereas I have been using PC's for over twenty years so obviously I am at an advantage.

1291358 2012-07-29 03:59:00 Cant take it with you.

If they have the interest then why is it an issue?

Unless we are referring to the lies and bullshit spouted by salespeople in certain stores.I think he might be referring to the rip off repair people. I have had two dealing with former geeks on wheels clients. Both elderly couples, bothe been taken foe excess of $500 dollars each on computers that are probably worth less then that. One a email problem on a mac where the OS was reinstalled , when I got to it, it was as simple as dining there ISP for the email password, second was malware, after geeks on wheels finished, I still had to do a complete reinstall

1291359 2012-07-29 04:14:00 There is a saturation of tablet and mobile hardware and it uses (benefits, e.g. mobile shopping), i.e. tablets, apps, Samsung, HTC, smart-phones, iOS, Android, etc. Most topics are about those products/services in major general tech sites. Once the partial domain of laptops and PC's but decreasing in topicality that I have noticed in my subscriptions. Research has consistently shown a increasing trend for tablets/mobile uses.

I guess it's fitness for purpose for the desire to use tablets, for any generation. Though 61 year old apple co-founder steve wozniak, seems to think otherwise with his massive stash (mashable.com) of devices.

Well that certainly makes a difference and I would agree as I have seen too many people ripped off and most of them by shops you would have thought to be better.
One I saw too late was where the on board graphics had died and they sold him another PC that was crap in comparison where all it needed was a graphics card. He ended up paying $400 extra he didn't need to for a PC with lesser specs and the shop probably just put a Graphics card in the old one and made a very handsome profit.

1291361 2012-07-29 05:51:00 As I am currently in the business of teaching some of the new technologies to seniors, I often ask them first, what they want to do on a computer. Most reply that they just want to email and go on the net and keep in touch with family etc.
So, I say to them, why not just get an iPad or an Android, they will do everything you want and more! Also something like that takes up a lot less room, and is easier to learn. Most seem pretty keen and we teach them how to use them and we're getting quite a few more now for the iPad classes.

Just because oldies weren't brought up with them doesn't mean they can't learn new technologies.

LLWhat do you class as old? Or should I say what age group are you teaching?

1291363 2012-07-29 06:40:00 Me thinks there is a lot of money being wasted by people who simply should quit their PCs and laptops for a tablet.
Mostly it is the older generation who are daunted by technology.
Had 2 instances just today. An elderly neighbour called in and happened to mention that he had had a tech looking at his laptop this week because the anti virus was not updating.
An older brother at their Gold Coast apartment had a tech there when I rang because they could not clear emails on their laptop.
Growled at both of them and even though money is not a prob they are reticent to change their ways!
My bet is that in a couple of years or less the saturation of the tablets will be with us - computer techos - keep your CVs updated!

If anything in this thread does not make sense it is the fact that he's talking about changing hardware for what is clearly a software problem.

But I could be totally wrong plod (107)

Guess I'm an old fart now then.
I hate tablets.

I see all this crap on the net now about games: they're the sort of thing that was state od the art years ago. Now when hardware is getting good, we have to go backwards cause we should all play with a teeny device with a wee screen and limited hardware in it.
Although I suppose it appeals to the facebook/twitter fans, walk around posting drivel on public noticeboards.

No hardware in the world requires anti-virus software until you put other software on it that can get infected.

Any hardware can be used as an "appliance" given the correct software.
