1291295 2012-07-29 08:38:00 Tut, can you tell us a bit about the orphanage you're visiting? There may be some PF1'ers wanting to contribute ...

Walone, I visited the orphanage last year and was impressed with what they were achieving and how happy the children were.
I wanted to help in some way but being on a pension have only my time to give. I have saved for a year for this trip. I have little but compared to what these children have I am very rich.
Just recently someone broke into the orphanage and stole their large TV used for their nightly Kmer dancing and also slit the throat of the childrens two kittens.
It would make you weep.

I have been asked to teach English or help with the mechanicals on the farm.

Below is the website for the orphanage (ACODO)
Any one want more info feel free to contact me.

Thanks, LL. Count me in, too!

Let's not forget that Tut will also need funds to cover any excess baggage ... :)

1291298 2012-07-29 09:48:00 I support LL over the idea of pens, pencils, colouring books and notepads - get really colourful pencils with erasers that are not only useful but which they will probably treasure. I am quite happy to put something in the pot as well - do the same by PMing me and I will do a transfer.

Personally I loathe snakes and ladders, and I don't think my grandkids like it either - it is too negative. You can however buy a compendium of games at a place like Toyworld - these sets usually contains games like Ludo, Snakes and Ladders, and Draughts (which is a game of skill rather than luck, and quite straightforward to learn). Agree with the idea of card games as well. My grandkids' favourite at the moment (those two are three and five years of age) is the game of memory where there are pairs of cards (e.g. the farmer's daughter) and you take turns to turn up one card and try to remember where its pair is.

PM me if you wish. John.

1291300 2012-07-31 19:43:00 I am a little humbled at the offers from members, especially LL, John H and Walone for the offer of monetary assistance.
Metla, I found a crappy version of snakes and ladders in the Warehouse hidden at the back of a shelf.
I will take that with me but as there are sensitivity issues it may not be acceptable so I can keep it out if sight until I am sure it will be OK.
Reading their website suggests that playing cards are not so acceptable either.

I think it would be best if I waited until I had been there a couple of weeks and see what the lie of the land is. I can report back and we can see what we can do for them.

1291301 2012-08-01 11:08:00 Really?

My kids love playing cards, and showing me really crap magic tricks.

I bought a couple board game packs from the warehouse, 15 games in each, Only cost about $12 each pack.

1291302 2012-08-01 22:44:00 The most fun our kids ever had was with water bombs, the ones with about 100 to a packet. Besides the traditional use, you can lob them over the hedge into the neighbours' and see what happens!
