| 1316083 | 2012-12-03 01:27:00 | Its a L500D its got a 15" screen, cost $1,100 pretty highly speced at the time. Bought it new about 4 years ago. When it is turned on it seems to hum as if the HDD was spinning but the screen is black. Thought it might be the screen so plugged in an external monitor but alas still nothing. No sound other than the hum. Bought a new battery for it about 6 months ago. Is it worth getting it repaired or best to throw it in the rubbish? Since its died I wont be buying another Toshiba, what do you experts recommend as a replacement? I have Samsung phone, net book and tv what are their lappies like? |

The failure rate is what you go buy....that's measured by several 1000 and how many of those fail. Under 3% is what you aim for...... But if you really want to avoid them again, then ASUS. |

| 1316087 | 2012-12-03 04:43:00 | Laptops and it doesn't matter what the brand can and do fail at anytime. 4 years for a laptop before failing is not uncommon, many dont last that long. Seen it hundreds of times, laptops wont last as long as a desktop PC. It depends on several things, how they are treated, if they are consistently being moved around or sitting on a desk and never go anywhere, if they are always put on soft surfaces ( carpets, beds etc) and suck in all the fluff, dust , blocking off the cooling causing components to over heat thus reducing their life, the list goes on. |

Or you risk the new lappy will having the same brand of parts in it. After all , its just assembled with parts made by many other companies . Just a bit of sarcasm  :-) |

Since its died I wont be buying another Toshiba, Why not?? You got 4 years out of it and these days for a laptop that's not too bad. I bought my wife a Toshiba about 4 years ago and it's still going fine compared to the IBM, HP and Compaq that she has had over the years all of which have had some major problem within the first 2~3 years. At work we have given up on the HPs, Compaqs and Lenovos as they all have short lives and have gone to tosh. I have a new Toshiba C850. Seems to go well.. |

| 1316092 | 2012-12-04 20:50:00 | I think the bottom line is every Brand sells a few duds/lemons. Some so shockingly bad they should never have been allowed on the market (my mother bought one of those, didnt want to listen to my advise) The faulty laptop should be repairable, look for a company that gives free quotes. Some of the Chinese laptop repair specialists can work miracles(pretty cheaply), even doing board level repairs (chipset replacement etc) Unfortunately you need to consider : what is the value of a 4 year old laptop ? |
