1291270 2012-07-28 05:36:00 I have a quickie from WIKI:::

Near field communication (NFC) is a set of standards for smartphones and similar devices to establish radio communication with each other by touching them together or bringing them into close proximity, usually no more than a few centimetres. Present and anticipated applications include contactless transactions, data exchange, and simplified setup of more complex communications such as Wi-Fi.[1] Communication is also possible between an NFC device and an unpowered NFC chip, called a "tag".[2]

NFC standards cover communications protocols and data exchange formats, and are based on existing radio-frequency identification (RFID) standards including ISO/IEC 14443 and FeliCa.[3] The standards include ISO/IEC 18092[4] and those defined by the NFC Forum, which was founded in 2004 by Nokia, Philips and Sony, and now has more than 160 members. The Forum also promotes NFC and certifies device compliance.[5]

Does this mean I can read the RFID chip-things in products at stores - the ones they use for security?

1291271 2012-07-28 05:45:00 Depends on the RFID implementation in question. Most of them no, but some of them possibly yes. Erayd (23)
1291272 2012-07-28 06:30:00 It'll scan your credit card. It won't know what to do with the information, but you can at least make the Nexus 7 go "Bzzzzt" :D Chilling_Silence (9)
1291273 2012-07-28 06:55:00 Although I don't see it being a real problem now.

1291274 2012-07-28 07:04:00 I'm gonna try a few of the RFID Security tags, but I think they get depermed (SP?) when they deactivate them at check-out in a store.

I had a hat with an active RFID in it that set off the anti-theft portal at a lot of stores. I never thought it was under the sweat band, but a security officer offered to find whatever was tripping their system and found it after a while.

The original store where I bought it never deactivated it I guess.

Yes - I paid for it originally.

That'll be a bit of a buzz.

Read that a couple of days ago, it's a real non-event ...

1291277 2012-07-28 13:57:00 As I understand it, the data transfer speed is so slow that anything of value although it might be 'seen' would take too long to acquire by a nefarious person.

When I created my business cards I put one of those scannable square patterns on the back of them with my address in code. I'll play with that a bit with my N7.
