86437 2002-10-05 21:11:00 When booting my machine it runs through the BIOS settings showing the devices connected, the system then gets to "VERIFYING DMI POOL DATA" and then comes up with "OS NOT INSTALLED INSERT SETUP DISK AND PRESS ANY KEY". once you press a key the system boots as per normal.

Booting is set for A: then C: then CD-drive. If I leave a bootable CD in the machine it will boot automatically from the CD.

Any ideas?

86438 2002-10-05 21:20:00 What was the outcome of the suggestions given to you last time you asked this question?

If they didnt work, perhaps you could say what happened when you tried them?

86439 2002-10-06 04:25:00 Another reason for the error message is that the bootable partition is hidden. Use Partition Magic or efdisk to remove the partition attribute. Merlin (503)
86440 2002-10-06 04:46:00 when it boots does the bios id the hardrive correctly? also what happens if you change the boot order to c: first? is the hardrive connrcted to motherboard or to a ide card? tweak'e (174)
86441 2002-10-06 05:12:00 I had this problem with a computer I was working on at the beginning of the year, and it turned out to be the bios (through incessant testing I finally worked out what it was) - replaced the board under warranty and problem was solved.

86442 2002-10-06 07:04:00 All the hardware checks out in the BIOS and other system operations.

Rearranging the boot parameters in the BIOS does not change the final outcome

86443 2002-10-06 07:30:00 Did this machine ever work with XP installed on it?

Did this machine ever work with another operating system? if so what.

How did XP get on the machine? Clean install or upgrade.

What partitions are recognised by MS fdisk? Or any other disk partitioning programme.

Are the drives IDE or SCSI?

86444 2002-10-06 08:10:00 The machine previously worked perfectly with XP installed. It still does other than the break in the boot sequence. It also worked with 98SE.

Instalation was a clean install of XP, The disk is an IDE, and the partitions are correct and the H/D is running fine with no errors.

86445 2002-10-06 20:21:00 So how do you know it's not a BIOS error?

86446 2002-10-06 20:54:00 Four options to choose from.

1. Check the HDD manufacturer for a disk testing utility and test the hard drive.

2. Virus check the hard drive - specifically for a boot sector virus.

3. Replace the IDE cable - if using a 40 pin cable, try an 80 pin depending on the drive (check with the HDD manufacturer).

4. Reinstall XP after completely wiping the hard drive (use the DOS based program Wipe from IBM's site), remembering to reinitailise the MBR.

If the same problem exists, the hard drive, IDE cable, operating system and boot sector viruses are eliminated as factors. The motherboard then becomes the next logical item to replace.
