86363 2002-10-05 11:09:00 Hi

I'am working on 8 Windows XP Pro machines on a Windows 2000 server at a school.

We run software for the teachers from a mapped drive (M:). I have found working with Windows XP Pro everytime you do sometime to one user it does not affect the others - which is good and bad. Do i have to map every user on every machine?

So if i want to do onething that affect all the user - is this possible?

I have had a quick look at pgedit.smc (I think that the right spelling) can this help?

The teachers have logons and are in a group called "teachers" on the server.

Cheers Wayne

86364 2002-10-05 11:52:00 You are vague in what you ask and also in describing the setup .

On Windows 2000 server create a domain .

Create a template with a home directory and a user profile location . Place it in a group . Disable the template account . Set policies and permissions on the group . Use the template when adding users (teachers) . Change/alter permissions and policies on the group rather than the user . Also consider logon scripts .

Also, consider either buying some books on 2000 Server and reading further or employing someone on a contract basis .

86366 2002-10-05 21:15:00 Do you mean that you want to run Terminal Services on each XP workstation? Merlin (503)
86367 2002-10-06 07:47:00 What i normal do is logon as User1 say use Window Explorer to see a dir. on the server - right click and map as M drive on the windows 98 michines when I logon as say User2 on the windows 98 michine the mapped drive is aviable.

BUT when I do this on The Wind XP Pro michine the mapped drive is not there under User2 - Say what I am asking on Windows XP Pro how do I map once and have the mapped drive aviable for all user that logon on to that michine?

86368 2002-10-06 08:46:00 I think you're after a logon script for those users. -=JM=- (16)
86369 2002-10-06 08:54:00 Do you want a common drive/folder on the server that all the users/teachers can access, or

Do you want a personal drive/folder for each user/teacher to access regardless of what machine they use, provided they logon using their own details?

Or do you want a combination of these?

Btw - where are you?

I would like a common drive mapped from the server that all the users/teachers can access.

The program is installed on the server BUT for users to use it. It is best to have the folder mapped. Only a techers logon can see the folder on the server that the progarm is installed on and I have to run a small program that lets u run the program from the server.

This thing is if I have say 15 teachers that might logon on too that michine, I would have to logon each techer and map the drive.

15 x 10 (ten in total Win XP Pro's) = 150 logon's and maps!!!!

So you see tha need to only do it once on each michine (like Win 98)

P.S. If i need a logon script - What?

86371 2002-10-06 13:17:00 Before anything else, plan . 90% of networks is done with pen and paper .
Consider if roaming profiles are required - do the teachers move around at all . Also consider mandatory profiles to overcome those who tinker . Consider also data security .

For your immediate problem I have presumed a domain exists,
Create a folder on the server - called home - and share it as home .

In Active Directory Users, create a group called teachers and place all the users who are teachers in the group .

Open each individual user in the teachers group and in the home folder change the drive to connect as M: to //<servername>/home/teachers where <servername> is the name of the server .
After entering this in the second and subsequent servers, you will be prompted that the folder exists and access permissions . Agree and ignore .

If you anticipate further users/teachers, consider making a template to copy as new users are required . Name it some relevant and disable the account .

Open the folder home, right click the folder teachers and open the properties . Click the Security tab and add the administrators group . Click the full control checkbox . Add the teachers group and click all permissions that are necessary .

Clear the checkbox to allow inheritable permissions .

Close, logon at a workstation as a teacher and the shared folder appears .

What area is the school in?
