86903 2002-10-07 19:53:00 When e-mails are in "Inbox", to delete them, they have to be highlighted.
Once highlighted, does this actually OPEN the mail? I have FROM and SUBJECT bar right down at the bottom, so can't SEE the message.....
but have noticed today, that once highlighted, the envelope is OPEN.
Won't that let a virus in ?

The "Unknown" one looks like a message from a friend....but dont know any one by those initials. It is 2nd down on the list, still "closed".

Does this make sense....trying to make it easy to understand.

Know the meaning of paranoia, ....too beautiful a day for that....just kidding. Appreciate any help. Also have another question regarding ordinary computer techniques.....do you answer those too.?? Will post later.

86904 2002-10-07 20:05:00 If there is an attachment, better safe than sorry, just delete it. The main problem with Outlook and Outlook Express is that if you are using the preview pane, the virus may open automatically.

You can turn the preview pane on or on by choosing View :: Preview Pane on the menu up the top.

From memory, the emails will only show as unread (open envelope) if you click on them and the preview pane in turned on, or if you open them completely.

Yes, it can let a virus in, especially having the preview window at the bottom (even if it's down the bottom the preview is displayed). You need to turn the Preview window off. What email program are you using? Outlook? Outlook Express? If you can post back with which one you use, I can try to explain how to turn the preview off. Once the preview is off, you can safely delete the email just by highlighting (don't double-click because that will also open the email) and deleting.

86906 2002-10-07 20:08:00 If you have Preview pane selected and it sounds as if you have then it will open the message when you click on the header.
If you click on the divider and drag up you will see the opened message in the lower pane.

To select a message and delete without opening it select View tab at the top and go to Layout
Remove the tick from preview pane and Apply and Ok

B-) You are all just GREAT!!! Cool as!!! And quick...Wow!! Would have taken me ages with Jeeves or whatever. Yes, I am on Outlook Express.
Always remember, I only have a computer that sneaked thru the pre-historic period....Windows 95. ;\ ;\ ;\

O.K....how can I delete complete letters from Microsoft Works. They are
printed...finished. The way I write, including waxing lyrical with prose ( must be the spring-time) I'll end up with a clogged, breathless computer!! ;) Like a tidy "work space".

86908 2002-10-07 20:58:00 Maryann.. do you have any virus software installed? Perhaps you should look at taking the extra measure and getting some protection. Just don't forget to set the signature updates to upload every day so that you get all of the latest virus protection. It will certainly give you peace of mind!

You can download AVG from here (www.grisoft.com 47f)

Double-click on the message you want to read (the same as you double-click on an icon on your desktop to start a program), and the message should open in a new window quite readable :)
