86816 2002-10-07 08:13:00 Having done my time in dos (Old fool) and remembering the fun trying to get back deleted files in MSdos five & six I'm wondering if there is any way of finding similar commands in Win98 etc. now that dos has been retired, or is it possible to get back files deleted after the b... bin has been emptied. Ive a computer that has lost a directory(folder) and all included files, seems they may have been wiped by mistake.
Are there any programs that may help finding deleted files etc.

86817 2002-10-07 08:47:00 I take it the b... bin is the recycle bin.

DOS is still around in Win 98 - Start; Run; then type "command". In the DOS screen try the old DOS commands if you can remember them.

How did you lose them? Were they deleted or could they have become hidden for some reason? If hidden try changing to the directory and using the attrib command.

Beyond that - ? Others may have ideas.

86818 2002-10-07 09:13:00 The big problem is that DOS 6.22 / Win3.1 didnt use long file names and didnt use FAT32, so that trying to use the utilities from the earlier DOS will cause problems. In fact if you try to use them Windows will usually prevent it. You can use the old undelete.exe from DOS6.22, but you have to issue the 'lock' command first, and you have to run it in DOS mode, not from Windows. Then after undeleting, the command 'unlock' is used. If the files have been overwritten then they wont be recoverable, and you wont be able to recover a directory.

There is a whole heap of 'external' DOS commands that were not carried over into Win9x.

86819 2002-10-07 09:30:00 norton utils provides an extra layer of protection ($at a cost$) but unfortunately you don't get to play w/ the command line to use it ;) loser (538)
86820 2002-10-07 09:45:00 The September NZ PC World CD comes with a full version of "Finaldata Basic 1.0" which recovers deleted files from the Recycle Bin as long as they haven't been written over. I don't know if you need to have this program running before you empty the Recycle Bin. Jen C (20)
