| 86663 | 2002-10-07 02:01:00 | I have a computer with XP Home and a 80GB hard drive with 4 partitions. Is it possible to install Windows 98 and setup a dual-booting system without reformatting my hard disk and/or having to reinstall Windows XP? Is there a program which lets you do this? If so what is it? Thanks. | Denfinn (1658) | ||

You should be able to insert the CD and install it, I'm not too sure if it will update XP's boot loader. It would have bee neasier to do it the other way around, but I'm' pretty sure you can just install it as usual and then it'll update the boot loader! |

If W98 is installed, it probably won't recognise the XP structure as "legal" Windows, and will load its own boot sector, which will stop XP from booting. You might be able to then boot from an XP CD and "repair" XP ... that might work. I don't know. Be backed up . ;-) |

Be backed up . ;-) It probably will - if not, load the recovery console (from the Windows XP setup CD) and use "fixmbr" and the boot setup program (I can't remember what it's called) from within there. | 86668 | 2002-10-07 05:26:00 | I don't think so. You need to have 98 on C:\ with it's associated boot files or else it won' work even if you fix the XP boot loader - If I were you, I would just start from scratch - st least then you know it will workm, and you will not have problems. READ THE FAQ!!!! That is why it is there. If you had read it, you probably wouldn't have had to ask this question. If you have any trouble post back and I will try to help you, but ONLY if you have read the FAQ first. G P |

Follow the instructions to delete a partiton at the end of the drive, shift all the others across and to create a primary partition at the front of the drive . Hide the partition with XP installed, set the new partition as active - or bootable - and restart . Install Windows 98 - or any other version - on the new partition . Purchase a boot loader and install it on the partition that has 98 ont it . Configure the boot loader according to the instructions . There are a myriad of other things to plan for - my rates are quite reasonable . The other option is to start from scratch - repartition the hard drive, format, install 98 followed by XP . Also here, my rates are reasonable . Of course in either case, back up any critical data first . Oh - there is a third but that involves the purchase of another machine . |

Except I was copying an image of one partition to another for purposes of replacing a HDD. Hid the original partition so as to boot to the new one. Tricky for a newbie though. Keep it up - I always seem to learn a small tidbit of new info every time you post re: multi boot's. G P |
