86892 2002-10-08 11:22:00 Well if there is a free ad free version that could open my chat page I would prbably explore it some more, until then it will just be something to play with when I have some spare time. I did do some customising of the tool bars, but until I can get rid of that blasted add box I really can't get any more screen space. Also, I disliked the fact that there was no "Links" for my most often visited sites for easy access.
Also, I think I read somewhere that certain Internet banking sites don't support Opera, is this true?

86893 2002-10-09 00:24:00 there is no ADFREE free ver unless you buy it *cough* ;-)

>there was no "Links" for my most often visited sites for easy access

i dislike the "links" style of IE. takes up to much space :) OPERA is a liitle different so it will take a while to customise it to your needs. some sites will not work with opera. the way to get around that is to change operas identity in quick preferences(makes it tell the server its IE or mozilla).

opera dose not support activeX (thankfully, tho a plugin is advailable), IE and NETSCAPE only codeing and active webpages??? (little unsure on that but its ment to be fixed in the upcoming opera ver7)

the only thing that really bugs me is website makers who use IE only (non-standard) code so no other browser works.

Hmm....strange! My links style is (Links>>) and thats it! Not much space taken there.
I get the impression I should be able to find a free adfree version some how, or modify my existing one? Still, (don't shoot me down) I,m quite happy using my IE6, just always on the lookout for better options.

86895 2002-10-09 08:51:00 With Opera it is free with ads (not spyware) just one ad. You can use fullscreen mode F11 which will hide the ad. Or you could pay for the software. -=JM=- (16)
86896 2002-10-10 01:38:00 Still trying to make Opera work for me but it won't open my MSN Groups site. How do you get around this? Run two different browsers? Danger (287)
86897 2002-10-10 01:54:00 at lot of MS sites run activeX and ms only code which opera dosn't support.

i use opera as main browser and IE as back up for those sites that refuse to work with opera.

86898 2002-10-10 02:01:00 Ok, and you find the benefits off using Opera worthwile to do this eh? Do you really find it to be that much quicker than IE or are there other features you prefer? Do you use the paid up version or do you just put up with the adds? How much is the add free version? IE is free, relatively quick and opens all the sites I have been too, so still looking to see why I would want to stick with Opera?
PS, I am using it now!

86900 2002-10-10 02:12:00 it has a few features i like, eg back button goes back a page without reloading. cacheing is a lot better. sheer size of opera..its smaller than most MS updates!! speed wise its about the same as a tweaked out IE6.
tends to handle "evil" sites well. havn't heard of any getting homepage hijacked with opera(yet). easy to change settings.eg id as IE or mozilla.
startup optoins eg startup with no pages or startup where you stopped last time. really handy after a crash. disable popups, sounds, movies, etc easly. works with my host file (mozilla/netscape is a pain with it).

the last time i had to drag IE out was to do more windows updates. yep you guess it...another round of IE updates.

86901 2002-10-10 02:13:00 i'm in the same boat as tweak'e.
It's definitely worth it because:
1) Microsoft can kiss my white hairy a.... (arm) :D
2) There are all sorts of rumours that MS track every site you go to blah blah. I don't know if they are true, but if they are.... using Opera get you away from this.
3) Opera is way more customisable than IE. Check out the skins on the opera home page if you are into that sort of think.
4) You can set opera to open all pages inside of one window, which means you get a few tabs in opera instead of a dozen ie tabs on the taskbar.
5) Opera kills pop-ups for you! BIG plus.
6) You can have opera empty your cache on exit, therefore no hd space wasted for "temporary internet files".
7) Screen real-estate. With opera set up the way I have it, it take .5cm less space at the top than IE does (2.5 cm Opera vs 3cm IE)
8) Opera's "open in background" function when you right click a link.

Want me to keep going?
