87250 2002-10-08 12:18:00 I posted problem a few days ago about error message "Installer terminated prematurely" when trying to install Office2000 with XP. Substance of responses was on lines that (a) I should try doing it again, (b) maybe it was pirated software (c) maybe disk had damage, (d) not XP that was the problem.
I'm afraid that none of these suggestions helped. The software wasn't pirated and I have had the disk for about 3 years. The installation failed on all of the 12 or so times I tried it with newly acquired XP. It succeeded on all of the 3 or so recent times with Win98 including the last time (done a day or so ago) where it is now running perfectly.
I had to scrub XP entirely since this clearly WAS the problem. I didn't activate it coz what's the use of activating a program that doesn't do what it's supposed to do? I need Office for some fairly extensive work I am doing, and since Win98 works fine I suppose I'll stick with it. While Win98 BSOD's aren't much fun, what is even worse is the recurring theme of WinXP that "program XXX has had an unexpected error and must close - you will lose all your work - we apologise for any inconvenience" etc. Anyone want a cheap XP disk (non-activated)?
