87130 2002-10-08 04:34:00 Ok so I got a new computer and already I've locked the settings on the dvd so that I can only view region 4 but apparently there is a patch for the dvd so that I can play any region available....but I don't exactlt know what it is that I'm doing.
I've downloaded and installed DVD Genie but I cant reset the vedor or user setting back to 5 or even set them to indefinate.

The Model of the DVD is
HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4120B

Firmware is 2.02

any help would be greatly appreciated.

87131 2002-10-08 04:44:00 From information I have read, I don't think you can unlock your settings. I read somewhere that once its locked, thats it.

If I am wrong, someone will shoot me down in flames

87132 2002-10-08 04:47:00 RPC2 mean anything? bubbyboy (2181)
87133 2002-10-08 05:16:00 You have to flash your drive with a fireware.

RPC-1 = Region free drive

RPC-2 = Region locked drive

Go here http://www.firmware.fr.st/

But a program called Region Killer can help if you can't do that.

87134 2002-10-08 05:23:00 the dvd drive is meant to lock after 5 zone changes, once that is done, then it is kinda impossible to unlock the drive, if u still had like 2 or more zone changes left then various programs would have worked to unlock the drive. Just in case u do have changes left, check out Cd Media World (http://www.cdmediaworld.com).

cheers,

87135 2002-10-08 06:35:00 bubbyboy,

I'm afraid you probably won't be able to unlock your drive once you've locked it - that's how they work. To use a region hack, you need to have some spare changes left, and you say you've already used them.

RPC-2 means that it's a region-lockable drive, therefore allowing 5 changes before locking to a specific region. RPC-1 means it's region free, and you can play any region disk in it.

elby.ch Killer[/url] will probably be your best bet at running disks from other regions now. It doesn't unlock the region, so the drive will always stay locked to the region it's on, but it tells Windows that the drive isn't locked, or tells Windows that it's set to a different region, so Windows will allow the DVD to play. This isn't foolproof, but from what I've heard, it usually works.

Some manufacturers have hidden settings that you can change to unlock the drive again - if you search the net you might find one for your drive, but I wouldn't count on it.

87136 2002-10-09 03:22:00 ok seems I didnt make myself clear and now that these been a few replies I know a little more than I did before.

OK I've got 4 vendor and user changes left....so now what I've been to www.firmware.fr.st but they don't have a match for my specific drive (which is HL-DT-ST 4120B).

so now what?

87137 2002-10-09 04:06:00 I just checked out the Firmware Page, and found a drive that is very similar, right down to the firmware version even. The HLDS GCC 4120B - and it lists a utility that can indefinitely reset the region counter call RPCMAN. A quick search on the net doesn't find much on this, but does net something that looks similar called KillRPC, which can be download from here.
