87101 2002-10-08 04:41:00 Can you provide a little more detail please ..... when is it slow (when you turn it on?, when you start a program?, etc.) & what are your system spec (processor, RAM, hard disk, video card, etc). antmannz (28)
87102 2002-10-08 06:16:00 thx 4 your reply, i am very new at this so be patient please. My girlfriend directed me to this sight thought i needed to clean up the unnecessary programmes by going to msconfig and deleting some that were not necessary. We did that and there were not to many there that needed doing, but in task manager there are heaps which probably will be slowing down the comp, examples:rundll 32. Exe, SNMP.EXE,TCPSVCS.EXE, WKCAIREM.EXE,CTFMON>EXE.,WCMDMGER.EXE,MSMSGS.EXE,DDCMAN>EXE, etc..............there are 18 more there i no what a few are some i could not find and dont no what they are. judexy (2146)

87105 2002-10-09 06:43:00 OK ... first of all, I would recommend increasing your ram to at least 256Mb, that would make a huge difference with XP, especially since your ram is also being shared for video purposes.
eg. 128Mb = 16Mb for video and 112Mb for XP.

Take a look at this (dipstick01.hostnz.co.nz) site. Check out the pages on Computer Maintenance and the first portion of Startup.

Also take a look at Pacs Portal (www.pacs-portal.co.uk). Click the Full-List link (about halfway down the page) and wait for the page to load. This page has a huge list of programs which run at startup, you should be able to identify them here.

I don't use XP so I can't recommend straight off which you should disable, but you should be able to make a reasonable guess after consulting the above page. If you are unsure post back here. :)
