2002-10-10 03:58:00 | Hi there: My PC fires up on it's own at about 9pm every night. I can see no reason for this as I don't bother to schedule jobs for anything. I am glad that I have an external modem that is left switched off as I receive this error message from the event viewer: "SAM failed to start the TCP/IP or SPX/IPX listeni......" This is my big clue, but what should I do to take it any further? Thanks Scott

2002-10-10 04:05:00 | This is interesting, we just had a post recently, and many of us debated the ability for a computer to turn itself on. We came to the conclusion that it can only do so if it is in hibernate mode. So first off to stop it, try disabling hibernate. 2nd, run some anti-virus software, and a prog called ad-ware. i think you can get it here http://www.larasoft.de after that run "msconfig" from the run command in your start menu, disable any programmes that maybe shouldn't be their. Note if you have things such as real player etc, loading at startup then everynow and then they will try to connect to the internet to update themselves

2002-10-10 04:09:00 | some power supplies will turn the computer on spontaniously if a slight surge or something goes through the supply. As for it doing it at the same time each night I have no idea | NathanTheKind (472) | |

2002-10-10 07:59:00 | If this coincides with an incoming phone call then you have "Wake on ring" enabled in the BIOS. Set it not to!! :-) | Elephant (599) | |
2002-10-10 08:48:00 | Thanks for your ideas all of you. Our ripple control comes on at about 1155pm and off again at about 0705. I am running Sophos anti-virus and it is updated daily. I have just run ad aware over my machine tonight again. Will see what that does. I am running Win2k and I ran winmsd and didn't find anything obvious on startup. Hmmmmm.. Thanks Scott

2002-10-10 11:33:00 | It appears that SAM is the Security Accounts Manager in win 2K. This file contains the user and admin passwords. Supposedly it will attempt to set-up a network connection initially using TCP/IP and if that fails it will use IPX. This is meant for password management of user shares in a networked enviroment only though. | Gorela (901) | |
2002-10-10 21:54:00 | If your PC is powered off, ie. not standby, hibernate or power saving..etc. then it is not possible for Win2K to start up your machine due to Win2K wasn't even running when your machine is switched off. What I am trying to say is the PC must powered on before Win2K start and do something. Since it's not Win2K, we can blame it on something else :) In BIOS make sure each of the following is Disabled. Wake On Lan Wake On Modem AC Power Loss restart Power up on PCI Card Automatically Powered Up You may not find all of the settings mentioned above since all motherboard BIOS are differrent but you should be able to find the first two options. If none of the above works then you might want to have your Power Supply checked as I'm aware that some strange PSU can turn on the machine if there's an slight change in the external voltage from the mains. | 87701 | 2002-10-11 03:42:00 | Do you have a surge suppressor between the computer and the power switch? We scattered them around the house back in 1994 - the year of the Auckland drought. Far too many thunder storms that year for my liking. As well as evening out the spikes you can also get one with an on/off switch, mount it close to hand and turn the power off there on shutdown. No power, no unexplained restarts.
