87530 2002-10-10 03:06:00 Roofus: if the 34 wire cable is disconnected the "select" light on the floppy will never light. Ever. ;-)

Because the control signals are "open collector active low", they have to be pulled to ground to be "on". If the cable has one end wrongly inserted, all the lines will be asserted (because all the pins on one side are grounds), and the select light will be on all the time. Same with IDE cables.

87532 2002-10-10 20:05:00 I'm ducking out now, everything i seem to have thought about in my head, is correct but when it comes to writing it down in this thread it seems to have come out all wrong.

Ignore anything i've said

87533 2002-10-10 20:16:00 I had similar problems with a Mavica Camera it would save to disk but could not be read on anyother PC or even the camera after it was tried in the PC. After muych swearing pulling apart and carefully putting back together (hey I'm a guy...pull it apart and give it a blow...works everytime right???) I took it to sony to see if they could find the problem...after shelling out $350 for a new drive for the camera they told me that sometimes the heads can become unaligned making the disk unreadable on anything else and at the same time damaging the disk surface, either that or the disks that I was using, when they were made were formatted with a drive that had unaligned heads... either way its all a bit dodgy to me. New drives aren't all that expensive and if all the cables are connected I'd try the disk that isn't working in another PC beofre shopping around for a new drive. bubbyboy (2181)
87534 2002-10-11 03:41:00 First, to make a readable floppy for that mouse driver. Format (full format, not a fast format) 2 (or more!) blank disks on the box you are having trouble with. Take those and the driver disk to another computer. "diskcopy a: a:" as many times as needed. There's a fair chance the doubtful drive will read a disk which has been formated on itself, even if it has been written on another drive.

Of course, if the drive can't format a disk it's faulty. ;-) Also -- is the computer still under guarantee? If so, stop and get the vendor to replace the drive or do whatever is needed. :D

87535 2002-10-11 03:58:00 Ron, at the place that I work we have 20 PC's which are identical (Ie same mobo, ram case, same room, etc) and on some of the sytems we have similar problems reading from the A: drive. Some are set up as desktop PC's while others are setup as tower PC's. On the tower PC's we have no problems, the desktops we are always having difficulties. It seems that the floppy disk is not seating itself correctly into the drive and therefore it is not being read properly.

87536 2002-10-11 04:24:00 I think most things are covered. In days when the floppy was king they basically all worked and the media were robust. Today the disks are useful as targets but that is about all. Suggest you forget the floppy altogether, download the drivers off the web and put it all down to experience !!
