87596 2002-10-09 22:33:00 I start InCd manually, I believe the icon in the sys tray should turn green after inserting a blank disc? It does not turn green.
I insert disc and run through the wizzard and start formatting. After about a minute the disc is ejected and an error pops up (00a8-0005-0021-0000 illegal request error, please reboot and fit new disc and try again). Did this twice with a new disc, same thing happens.
Went to Nero site and downloaded the latest version of InCd. This time it runs for only about 10 secs and spits the disc with a different error (0051-0003-0002-00ff disc error occured, please reboot etc etc........) twice with new discs.
Windows ME 800mhz 384 ram, Acer CD Writer, Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation CDRW discs.
Any ideas why this isn't working for me? I try so hard to be good and do my backups but keep running into obstacles, no wonder I put it off for so long.

87597 2002-10-09 22:39:00 It sounds like maybe your CD-Writer is at fault.
Have you tried just burning some data to a CD-R disc in Nero?
You are definitely using CD-RW discs??!!

87598 2002-10-09 22:43:00 The icon MUST turn into a green upward pointing arrow, before you can format. The formatting is done with incd - not Nero. If the arrow does not turn green, incd will not give you this option when opening. Most probable cause is the cdrw disc. This has happened with me, using a Kodak disc - another disc was OK.

87599 2002-10-09 22:58:00 Yes, I have burnt a back up to CDRW discs a few weeks ago as per this thread, pressf1.co.nz
I am definatly using CDRW and understand that I need to format them before using them as large floppy discs. I did not format the discs a few weeks ago so going off information in the above mentioned thread will be unable to update the info on them until I have deleted and formated them, is that right?
The discs I used several weeks ago were Elite Data and an unnamed disc that came with the burner, but again, I did not format them before burning.
It is the formatting option from InCd that appears to not be working.

87600 2002-10-09 23:39:00 Just checking mine again, and the arrow does not change until I put disc in, let it whir a bit, open incd then click on properties. Have a different writer than when I checked last, and have also updated incd. From memory, before the arrow automaticly changed.

87601 2002-10-10 00:32:00 Thanks Peter, I have just put in a cd that I did one of my backups too a couple of weeks ago and managed to format that, it deleted everything and then I did a back up to that disc. The arrow changed to green after the formating was complete!
I then tried to again format one of my new discs but get the same error as before, am I missing something? Doing it wrong? Just let me confirm, these blank discs do need to be formated before I use them so that I can use them as a large floppy?
The other thing is that when I formated the disc that had data already I had the option of a Reformat Method with either Format or Quick Format (erase file system) and a box with Skip sector search to reduce processing time.
When I tried to format the blank discs these options were grayed out and I just pushed Finish and it indicated it was formating before spitting the disc and the error message coming out. I must be doing something wrong arnt I?

87602 2002-10-10 00:57:00 Yes, you do need to format to be able to copy to it, like any folder or drive. I'm going off cdrw, as one that I had a lot of backups on, has decided not to work - can't read on either of my 2 cdr's - the one it was originaly burnt on or my new one - reverted back to an earlier incd version, but that didn't help. For the cost of cd's - Melody 40x $1.00 a pop at the Warehouse Stationary - I'll stick to them. At least as you formatted one OK, it shows that your system is OK. Don't know why it spat the dummy on the other.

87603 2002-10-10 01:29:00 Thanks for all your help Peter. Sorry to ask this again, I just want to be sure we are on the same wave link.
(1) When I did my original back ups a few weeks ago, I never ran InCd. I burnt to my discs ok but have the understanding that I can't change the info on them (use them like a floppy) without deleteing and formating them. Or did Nero automatically format them for me?
(2) I can burn to my discs without formating them, thats what I believe I did a few weeks ago as I never started InCd. I just can't use them as a floppy.
Same question really, I think I have this right?
Thanks for your patience, just a little confused how this is all supposed to work.
Maybe I need to try some other blank discs, perhaps there is a fault with the Mitsubishi discs? What do you do with all the old discs you must have? Use them as coasters? Wind mobiles? Frisbees? If you do a back up every couple of weeks there must be alot of old discs kicking around.

87604 2002-10-10 02:36:00 Cdr's don't need formatting - don't need to use incd for these either - just burn with Nero. If you don't close/finalize, you can add more progs until the disc is full - then close, otherwise you will not be able to read them on a non-burner cd. You need to use cdrw & incd to be able to use them as a large floppy - for these you need to format first. My c partition fits on 4 cd's, but I only back this up when I alter certain progs. Email etc & data is copied to d partition - not ideal if the HD goes belly up, but again, I burn these to cd's every now and again. And yes, my rubbish bin gets a bit of use - only keep the last 3 or 4 B/U's. The thread you mentioned earlier covers most of this. Just buy cheap ones and experiment !!

87605 2002-10-10 03:51:00 Thanks Peter, seeing as my mitsubishi CDRW disks don't seem to want to be formated with InCd I'm going to try just using them as CDR's, then when they are obsolete I will try to format them then or just chuck em. Danger (287)
