87502 2002-10-09 10:03:00 Ok... this might sound dumb, but I've installed XP Pro, and gotten the SP1 as well... everything works well, and I've installed an aspi layer as well (4.60).

My problem is that during the initial install, it detected something which it has labelled a "Parallel Device" ... I've installed all the necessary drivers but can't seem to find a driver for this mystery device.

I've only remembered now because it won't let me write cd's or rip audio from cd... Any ideas?

87503 2002-10-09 17:20:00 Is there anything plugged in to the parallel port?

What interface is the CD writer using?

87504 2002-10-10 03:19:00 It may have just decided that it has got a parallel port. That will have a DB25S ... the 25 pin socket on the back. You might have a printer connected to it. ;-)

I don't think you need need a driver for the port ... that's old technology, and the code to drive it will be in the BIOS ...

If you have a device plugged into it, that will need a driver.

87505 2002-10-10 04:27:00 have you installed motherboard drivers? tweak'e (174)
87506 2002-10-10 04:31:00 Yes, have installed mobo drivers.... yes I have a printer attached, but THAT'S running fine... it installed itself without drivers required...

I can no longer rip audio through the cd-rom using Musicmatch... have to use CDex, but also a test using Nero CD-Speed shows that it won't go faster than 12X ripping... it looks as if DMA isn't working properly? The Aopen CRW3248 should be one of the fastest with DAE extraction...

87507 2002-10-10 04:34:00 The printer might be pinching the DMA channel your CD driver wants. That should show as a conflict, I think ... but "I know nuttin'". Graham L (2)
87508 2002-10-10 04:36:00 Hmmm... well, how do I re-allocate the DMA channel my printer might be stealing? Lohsing (219)
87509 2002-10-10 04:43:00 I think (or some approximation) that in Device Manager you can change resource allocations . . . You could try (in the BIOS setup) changing the printer port mode from ECP to EPP . (I think (again) that's the order ---ECP using DMA and EPP not) . Of course that might stop the printer working :D .

But have a look at those resource pages in Device Manager --- this may be a red herring .

87510 2002-10-10 04:47:00 So would upgrading to XP have changed settings in the BIOS?? I would've thought it would've been kept the same.... Lohsing (219)
87511 2002-10-10 04:57:00 Although it is possible . . . I've written programmes to modify BIOS settings . . . I doubt that the OS would . . . but its allocation of IRQs and DMA channels might be different between versions .

Have a look and see what is being used by the printer and by the CD connection . If there's a conflict, and the printer is using DMA, then try stopping the printer from using DMA with the BIOS, and see if that fixes it .
