This evening I "accidently" removed Outllook express 6 via add/remove. I then ended up with OE5. I decide to use system restore and roll back a couple of days which fixed that problem. However, my NAV definitions have gone south. I get a message that NAV is "unable to find valid virus definition files. Please reinstall NAV."

I have been to Symantec support (service2.symantec.com) which specifically mentions this problem. I downloaded the HawkingTool.exe program which refuses to open/run. My problem is due to the restore and I have ME so I don't know why it won't run.

I really do not want to reinstall NAV so I was wondering if I undo the restore, go and save the virus definitions file (what does it look like?) onto a floppy or CD, then roll the system back again and replace the definitions manually, would this actually work? Or has my viral definitions gone for good?

I thought that I should quit now while I am (and the PC) are not in too much of a mess and ask the experts.

Thanks
Jen

My current NAV signature file for Win98 is called 20020930.009

You should be able to manually download the latest virus definitions from Symantec then reload into the Virus defs folder.

Find it on your computer at C:\programfiles\common files\symantec shared\virus defs

I must add that I lost my defs recently on a Win2K box and couldn't reload them manually. They just wouldn't work. In the end I uninstalled and reloaded NAV, and ended up with an extra six months on my sub. So long as you have your internet order number (if you purchased your update subscription on line) you can get a new key and that gives you a full 12 or 24 months, even when you are already 6-8 months into your current subscription. Quirky, but who's complaining? :D

I manually downloaded the definitions and that did the trick.
