88068 2002-10-11 06:55:00 Does anyone know about the cable colours of a ADSL Splitter?
I've bought a Splitter from Redeal Networks in Mt Albert, Auckland - $43.88 - with the idea of installing it at my house's radiating 'hub', but wouldn't you know it, no data with the thing. Fair'nuf - usually sold to people who buy them by the dozen. It's a small sealed black box with 2 twisted-pair fly leads. One pair Orange/White, and the other pair Blue/White. One opinion is - Orange comes from the Exchange and Blue goes to the Distribution.
Has anyone got any thoughts on that?
As I see it, essentially this Telecom defined 'Splitter' is actually a 'filter'; not to be confused with what is refered to as the no-tool 'Filter' that you put on each phone. As I see it - please correct me if I'm wrong - this Splitter/Filter does for all the phones in a house, what each Filter would do for each phone. So, again please correct me if I'm wrong, it's a case of 'split' the feed from the street, feed the ASDL modem from one side of the split, and the other side feeds the house via the 'Splitter'. True? Please say so!! I'm told that this filter is passive and as such can't stuff anything up. Just, get it wrong and it won't do it's job.
Not a lotta data out there on this. Kind'a curious situation really. On the one hand, there's people like me who just want to do our own phone wiring, and on the other, there's parties that don't want bunnies stuffing up the system. Can't say's I blame them.
Has anyone out there actually got a splitter? Does it work for you? Are your phones noisy? Are you able to see which way round it's wired? If you can, I'd love to hear about it.
Cheers

88069 2002-10-11 07:04:00 The filter is a low pass filter. As you say, the "upstream" side (before the filter) has to feed the ADSL modem. All the HF is filtered out so it doesnt interfere with the phones on the downstream side.

As a point of interest, I simply used a single phone type splitter, and it filters the line to the whole house, ADSL just connects before it. Its much cheaper than the alternative and works well (Nokia filter)

Cant help with the colours. I was able to accommodate the BT plugs OK in my setup.

I terminate the incoming line at a standard socket (at the ADSL site) and terminate the house wiring at the socket beside it. I also have a mini PABX there, so just filter the input.

88070 2002-10-11 08:19:00 Hi Morri, you are perfectly correct.Orange/white goes to the line coming in and the wire to your adsl jackpoint,blue/white goes to the rest of the phones.Everything else is right too,(I cas see you are a very bright chappie)and they do a much better job than the plug in filters,in my opinion(from someone who has to fix stuff-ups from people who install adsl themselves). Thanks for your reply
Great to connect with others out there with previous expeirence.
Makes sense about using a filter to 'feed' a whole house. It's just ac current.

88072 2002-10-11 09:48:00 Hi Peter
Many many thanks for your note! Great to know my info on the colours is right. I figured the rest as fairly basic but I was real stuck in the colours. (as they say - insufficient data )
I don't know about the 'bright chappie' bit Peter! Experienced yes, bright maybe! Read my tonight's post on data recovery afor you think of me as bright!
But I have done my share of wiring in my time. We think we have problems and holdups today, but they ain't nothin' compared to where we were at 30 years ago. Yeah, Yeah. 3 months to get a new company phone on. Imagine a new company today trying to survive it's first 3 months without a phone. Any flat I lived in always had the standard single phone in the hallway - hard to chat up your girlfriend in a hallway letme tell ya! First thing I'd do is extend the cord with my well-travelled 20-metre length of 3-core wire. I had friends real nervous cos you could be done for "tampering with the telephone system". Bloody good memories. But I wouldn't wanta go back then. Stuff the 'good old days'. No ADSL back then!
Thanks once again for you info Peter
