87888 2002-10-10 21:40:00 Hello all, I have recently completed an IT diploma in web design and programming. I find it hard to get positive response or get foot in the door :( I figured it would be nice to start building my portofilio and do some freelance work. Has anyone been through the similar situation?? I am also keen to make some contacts here. I have completed a site at www.wumania.co.nz . Feel free to give me some feedback :) ta!!

87890 2002-10-10 22:14:00 Glad you pointed that out, I have fixed that. It's fully working. My web host has problem with ASP generated dropdown box. Now it's fixed.. I will change the webhost soon. :p

PS. Buy it at your risk, it's not opened for business yet !! :)

87892 2002-10-10 22:27:00 OK, you can set up your own web design business, or you can freelance, or you can do both.

With either option the first thing you need are skills and lots of examples of your work. One site does not give any indication to your range of skills, or your flexibilty or imagination.

Now I assume from your post that you have such skills and are working on a portfolio.

The next step is to come up with a business plan (look in the library or online for details). This is the most improtant step as you what know where you are going without it, and will not stay focussed nor acheive the goals you want (thats if you even know what they are without a business plan).

You then need to get out and market yourself to e\webdesign compnies and to the public. Phone them, advertise in the paper, etc. If people don't know you exist, how can they hire you?

Then you have to be easily accessable, and provide prompt service.

Once you have the contartc, and all is done do not forget to send the accounts ut on time. No accounts no money.

87893 2002-10-10 22:43:00 hey wumania, i have a question
how did you like the course you took for web design, and did you come out with heaps more knowledge, etc (where did you do it?)
im thinking of doing something along those lines, and going full on in that area, i havent had any formal training towrds this line of 'work', but think i would really enjoy it as a career.
i have made a few sites, and am atm learning php and mysql from home, and feel that i could really do good, aye (as humble as that sounds :D)
so yeah, how do you feel about that stuff?, and is the diploma you got any good?

grtz sal.

87895 2002-10-11 02:37:00 Hey, you dont happen to have some noodles called Jin Ramen I think, Hot as things, gotta love them though. I had a korean neighbour who used to have them, now the only place I can find is a 45 minute drive away?!

Nice design/Layout
Graphics are nice, easy read too...
It loads pretty fast also, which is a good plus!
Otherwise, I think pretty much everybody else has said its a good site... :-D

Cheers

87896 2002-10-11 09:05:00 Thanks tweak'e for the debugging. I must say I cut and pasted most of template code. I used notepade thus there was not much I could do with error-checking. I will go change the errors as you mentioned. You sounded very much like my programming tutor :p wumania (2209)
87897 2002-10-11 09:11:00 Thank you Graham, your advice is very helpful. Yes, I need to start writing my goals and visions as a form of business plan. Also I will need to learn a bit more about writing contracts and building up my portfolio/contacts. Looks like being a self-employed person is not an easy path, but I bet the result will be rewarding. wumania (2209)
