88451 2002-10-12 01:09:00 Can anyone help with my problem.
During start up, the computer displays the following message "While initializing device vsdata95: Windows protection error. you need to restart your computer."
Pressing the reset button allows the computer to restart into the windows start up options window with "Safe Mode" selected, however if I start in safe mode and then restart windows it up with the same error message as above. If I select to start normal everything works as normal and I have full operation of the computer.
I have identified the reference "Vsdata95.vxd in C:\Windows\System and is virtual device driver.

88452 2002-10-12 01:31:00 Hi Kelvin

Do a search on Google for <vsdata95.vxd +error> and you will find a pile of info that may help. Sorry but I don't have time right now to refine that further. You could also do a search for vsdata95.vxd on Press F1 as well, it may have been asked previously. Search button is at the top of the F1 home page

Cheers

88453 2002-10-12 05:23:00 you have zonealarm installed but either you ave tried to remove ZA or it has been disabled somehow.

ZA's website has proper removal instructions. basicly boot into safe mode and remove zonealarm, vsdata95.vxd and its registry entries.

88454 2002-10-12 06:26:00 ZoneAlarm is particularly bad at leaving a heap of detrius behind after so-called uninstalling, as Ive just found out.
This page (www.zonelabs.com) on the ZA site tells you what to do to completely remove it. (As I found out after doing it all by searching the registry)

88455 2002-10-12 08:51:00 Thanks for your help everyone it was much appreciated.

For the record, yes I did try to uninstall ZA. I installed the latest version and found that it opened the "Dial-up box" when ZA started so I uninstalled and reinstalled the previous version! Then the problem started, I hadn't related the two.

Uninstalling ZA again and using "Reg Clean" fixed the problem, I have reinstalled ZA 3.1.291 and am so far having no problems.

Kelvin :)
