88376 2002-10-11 09:44:00 Hi people,

Could someone please explain to me what an "External e-modem" is as opposed to a modem.?:|

I have seen and heard you can get all sorts, I'm looking and saving up for an external modem that will give me no hassels with drivers for Linux.

I have found that Advantage Computers have Dynalink 56K External e-modems for $117.50. I think that sounds pretty good.

cheers merlin-nz ;-)

88377 2002-10-11 09:54:00 Its only a name.
The e-modem is a full hardware modem, supported by Linux.

I think Susan B bought one recently, as far as I am aware they are good.

The price looks OK as well.

88378 2002-10-11 10:03:00 Dick Smith got modems that come with Linux drivers. Your nearest is Palmy. JohnDoe (2202)
88379 2002-10-11 10:24:00 The DSE ones are soft modems though, you would have a lot less worries with a real modem like the e-modem. godfather (25)
88380 2002-10-11 10:37:00 Thanks GF,
DSE is not very high on my list of places to purchase stuff, There is a place close by if I don't use Advantage but they only have Brightcom 56K External $119.00. They any good or stick with Dynalink. Thanks

cheers merlin-nz ;-)

88381 2002-10-11 10:50:00 Don't know the Brightcom, but would tend to use Dynalink or D-link.

I have had a lot of experience with both brands, used to buy them by the 100's (not for PCs though) and they were very reliable.

I use 2 D-link ones here (backup only now to ADSL).

Confusing, the 2 names but no connection between companies. D-link are dearer, the e-modem looks the best buy.

88383 2002-10-11 12:05:00 Stay away from Brightcom!!!!!!! JohnDoe (2202)
88384 2002-10-11 23:12:00 Yep, I bought a Dynalink 56K e-modem a few months ago and am very happy with it. Haven't used any of its bag of tricks yet, apart from just internet surfing, but it hasn't frozen the PC or internet connection like the internal one did.

$117 is a good price if it includes GST, Ascent (www.ascent.co.nz) sell them for $135.30 incl, free postage. I got mine from Computer Future in ChCh, they were the cheapest at the time, for around your price.
