2002-10-11 17:14:00 | One or two people were vaguely interested in the book I was working on(they were being polite, I think). It finally arrived yesterday in my hot little hands. It is called "Beginners' Guide to Word and Excel". To be sold in Whitcoulls, not sure when. About $20 a copy, I think. It's a rollicking yarn of mystery, infidelity and intrigue. The hero rampages around the countryside having his way with...hang on, no that's not right. It's an incredibly dull book that covers the basics of Word and Excel in an attempt to help those who are thoroughly terrified of a PC. I deliberately avoided macros, mail merge, point labels on stacked bar charts, and other things that are confusing. It does mention PressF1 on the back cover, so we might get some new visitors here. If you spot any errors in it, please don't tell me. robo.

2002-10-11 19:05:00 | Not sure, don't think so. There is a rumour that unsigned copies will be worth more than signed ones ;) I have to admit I was very excited when it finally arrived. robo.

2002-10-11 19:47:00 | Mark C - tell me about the three unpublished novels. A friend of mine wrote a really good novel about five years ago and hasn't really pushed very hard to get it into print. I've read a lot and I am willing to read his again, it's a well written story. How hard have you tried? Do you want to get them published? robo.

2002-10-11 20:22:00 | Yeah well I got an excellent critique (cost $200) for the last one but she said also needs to be entirely rewritten. I get antsy and vain maybe, really. And can't be bothered doing all the work to rewrite. Stunning litle thing it was going to be "Teach Yourself Sunbathing". The other two were when I was in my twenties and thought I knew e'thing. Now I'm in my fifties and Know I do. Thought I'd give up on fiction and write "The enduring charms of despotism" as a straight out polemic which is what the others all were served up as fiction to make it more attractive. The critique person said there's actually a better market in non-fiction. Thanks for your interest. mark c (Gee I guess this is getting OT :D)

2002-10-11 20:41:00 | Re-writing is very tough. Editing your own work is tough. Self-belief means proof-reading your own work is impossible. I have half started about four stories, and I am not sure I will ever finish any of them. Just ideas that I had to put down in a doc file. The trick is getting someone to print the sodding thing. robo.

2002-10-11 21:03:00 | Yeah but I don't think you ever want to go to vanity publishing. We need that criticism. Like they say real famous rich people are surrounded by people who never tell them they are actually daft egomaniiacs. And go bonkers like Michael Jackson. Bit like writing. I've had good (I mean helpful) crtiiques from friends. Though one coot did just hand the manuscript back and said " Seen worse." Good luck with the short stories. :D

2002-10-12 05:54:00 | Thanks for the heads-up robo. I'll check it out, if it's any good (like it won't be) I know some people that it may come in handy for. Also it's not really OT because it is related to what PressF1 is about. Just had a quick look at the library website and they don't have it...... yet. But I noticed that your other one is taken out at the moment.

2002-10-12 06:44:00 | Reminds me, I have finally finished my undergrad dissertation!!!!!! YAY!!!!! 28,000 words on Planning Computer Systems. BORING! Well, it looks good, and since it is computer related and Robo started the ball rolling... It is aimed predominantly at the Land Surveying Profession and is called "Planning Computer Systems for Surveyors: The Pre-Purchase Recce" If anyone is interested in reading it, it is freely available in PDF format here (2guys1girl.hostnz.co.nz) (Plus a really good picture of me for tjose who are nosey). Hope it is of some help to some people. Not it is copyrighted, and cannot be reproduced without my permission, but I do not mind if it is distributed freely as long as it is not modified in any way. Anyone keen to publoish it??? :D G P
