Hercules Fortissimo III 7.1 Sound Card Overclockersonline have posted up a review of the new Hercules' Fortissimo III 7.1 sound card, Hercules answer to the Audigy 2. Here's a snip from the review: Budget-minded people probably know the older GameSurround Fortissimo II with Crystal CS4624 chipset and the GameSurround Muse with C-Media CMI8738 chipset. These still are fine & cheap 4-channel sound cards, but of course they both lack 5.1 high-end cinematic audio support. Now times have changed as Hercules have designed a whole new Fortissimo III sound card with 8-channel 7.1 sound support. This means you can hook up no less than 8 speakers to this card ... Let's check it out. Check out the whole review here (www.overclockersonline.com) and keep an eye out for this card as it could give the Audigy a real run for it's money. VIA has released a new integrated audio drivers ComboAudio 3.20b for all motherboards with onboard audio codecs integrated into VIA 686A/B/8231/8233/8233A/8233C/8235 southbridges. The new drivers have the following changes: a) Fixing the issue that setup failed at 74 driver under Windows XP. b) Fixing the issue that uninstall from control panel don't need refresh. New VIA Integrated Audio drivers ComboAudio 3.20b released (www.viaarena.com) Speed Up your Windows XP boot time without using a program Here's a tweak that will dramatically reduce your boot time of Windows XP. The tweak is a registry hack and when I tried it, my boot time was reduced by half. Here's the tweak: - Warning - changing Registry setting is dangerous and might crash your system. Use the following suggestions on your own risk. - start "Regedit" (if u dont know how then u should'nt be doing this). - Follow this string :- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -] SYSTEM -] CurrentControlSet -] Control -] SessionManager -] MemoryManagement -] PrefetchParameters. - Then look at the Prefetch string and change the value from 3 to 5. it doesn't matter if you keep it Hexadecimal or Decimal. - Close registry and restart WindowsXP; it should load up between 5-15 seconds (or even more) faster. If u get success spread the word and help others. Realtek have released a new version 3.32 driver for their ALC audiocodecs found on motherboards with Realtek integrated sound. Here's a snip of the post with the details: On behalf of the Xbox Linux Team (http://xbox-linux.sf.net), I am proud to announce that at 10:45BST the 'v1.1' secure version of the Xbox was proven to be running arbitrary BIOS code in a normal 256KByte modchip - with no additional hardware required. In short, in under a week we were able to normalize the new box to enable it to interoperate with Linux properly. It seems that the Xecuter modchip people (Xecuter (http://www.x-ecuter.com/)) beat us to the punch by one day, and we are grateful for some hints they seem to have given us at the very end. But we fundamentally each got there on our own. Work will now continue to integrate the new code into the Xbox Linux booting ROM. Thanks to everyone who contributed their ideas and worked on the crack, both in Xbox Linux and on XBOXHACKER, we who are about to run Linux salute you! Microsoft has posted a new IIS Lockdown tool to help reduce the amount of "surface" that can be hacked. The Wizard is version 2.1 and it works by turning off unnecessary features to provide multiple layers of protection against attackers, URLscan, with customized templates for each supported server role, is integrated into the IIS Lockdown Wizard. To keep the server completely secure, however, all hotfixes are required before and after applying IIS Lockdown Wizard to stay protected against known security vulnerabilities. You must be running Windows NT 4.0 running IIS 4.0, Windows 2000 running IIS 5.0 or Windows XP running IIS 5.1 before you can use the wizard. You can get more details on the new wizard from the Microsoft Download Center (www.microsoft.com) and download it from the link below: Microsoft IIS lockdown tool (download.microsoft.com) Easy Message, the all-in-one instant messenger that provides support for ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, and AOL at the same time, version 2.2 has been released with the following changes: -Now supporting HTTP proxy authentication -Service icons for contacts, (ICQ icons for your ICQ contacts..etc.) -Start minimized when you exit minimized -Bug fixes Easy Message 2.2 updated (www.easymessage.net) cheers monty (www.ozquake.com) |

| 88782 | 2002-10-13 09:37:00 | But 5 minutes? why not a stop/go penalty? why not a 1 minute penalty? 1 minute would have seen him out of contention for a win, but wouldn't have been so unfair. a very annoyed Mike. :( |
