89121 2002-10-14 08:58:00 Using Winamp 2.8 and looking at the songs' info about half of ours have their ID3v1 tags filled in and half don't.

What I'd like to know, is what purpose does this ID tag have? Obviously it must be some kind of database, but what programs make use of it and how do they use the info?

I'm wondering whether it's worth my while completing the ones that are empty.

It's what you see in the window of winamp.
A friend of mine had a nasty accident with a failed system and lost data that had to be recovered "professionally" when she got the data back all the files were renamed to things like nir~5477 It was only the ID tags that made the obscure ones identifiable. It was also great back in the Audio Galaxy days to find out all the stuff like when things were recorded etc etc etc.

89123 2002-10-14 09:45:00 Susan, if you decide to fill in some of the mpty tags (I recommend only bothering with tack, title, artist, album and genre, but suit yourself) then you should use a program designed for the function as you get better programmed tags, and get a better UI.

I have tried MP3 Tage Editor, and it was good, but didn't support newer version tags.

One that does, and is just as good is ID3 Tag-it. free from most download sites.

89124 2002-10-14 09:48:00 Graham ,
what is the "newer tag"??

winamp supports reading and editing from IDv3. Is there something more advanced than this?

89125 2002-10-14 10:04:00 Clueless, It's not IDv3, but ID3 v1 and v2. v2 is up to v2.4.

The diff between 2.3 and 2.4 is minimal, but the diff between v1 and v2 is not (MP3 Tag editor only supports v1.1).

Tag v1 has fields for Artist, title, album, track, genre (limited to one), year and comment.

Tag v2 has over 45 possible fields PLUS some that are reserved for future upgrades, AND you can store multiple genres etc.

Much better.

89127 2002-10-14 10:17:00 Hey i just went and had a wee look at winamp2.8
It supports both ID3v1 and ID3v2. It worth noting that ID3v2 as supported by winamp2.8 is nowhere as clever as what you described. I would have assumed that Winamp3 which didn't run well on my old beast, would have had support for a slightly more advanced tag again?

89128 2002-10-14 10:30:00 My mp3 player doesn't support all of the fields for ID3 v2.3 either, but let me assure you they exist.

Here is (www.egr.uri.edu) the v1.1 specification.

ID3 v1.x is explained here (www.id3.org)

ID3 v2.x is explained here (www.id3.org)

The v2.3 specification is here (www.id3.org)

Enjoy!

89129 2002-10-14 10:33:00 Here is a quote from one of those sites .

Has several new text fields such as composer, conductor, media type, BPM, copyright message, etc . and the possibility to design your own as you see fit .

Can contain lyrics as well as music-synced lyrics (karaoke) in almost any language .

Is able to contain volume, balance, equalizer and reverb settings .
Could be linked to CD-databases such as CDDB .

Is able to contain images and just about any file you want to include .

For greater compatibility between mp3 players, no ID3 tag is recomended . Most will play the new v2 tags nowadays though .

89130 2002-10-14 11:14:00 Hi Susan,

in my case filling out the mp3 tags was needed. 2 Reasons.

1) So that the Artist and Title would display on the mp3 enabled Car Stero

2) If you wish to use any of the MP3 organisers. The sorting all starts from the info in the mp3 tag
