New security hole plug program
GRC, the security site that bought you leak Test has posted up word on a program they have done called XPdite that will plug a security hole on Windows XP PC's that can't upgrade to SP1. Here's what GRC are saying about the hole:
Steve Gibon writes "Ever since its release, Windows XP has contained a critical flaw that could be trivially exploited at any time by any malicious hacker. By causing any Windows XP system to process a specially-formed URL (web-style link), the XP system would obediently delete all or most of the files within any specified directory. (That's not good.)

This flaw is considered critical because these malicious URLs could be delivered to any XP user through any means: via an eMail solicitation, a chat room, a newsgroup posting, a malicious web page, or even processed automatically without the user clicking anything by merely visiting a malicious web page. (That's bad.)

Curiously, Microsoft was informed of this easily-demonstrated, quite significant, and trivial-to-fix, Windows XP defect back in June of 2002, but chose not to proactively address the significant vulnerability created for their users until the September 9th, 2002, release of Windows XP's first service pack."
You can read a bit more on the program XPdite here (grc.com).

Western Digital WD2000JB review at Tom's Hardware
Tom's Hardware have published a review of Western Digital's biggest and fastest hard drive, the WD2000JB (www.tomshardware.com). Here's a clip from the review:
The improvements are to be found under its aluminum and cast iron casing: Western Digital has managed to give each platter 60 GB. Hard drives with 120 GB and 180 GB (with two and three platters, respectively) were to be expected, but the top model with 200 GB serves to show that more than 60 GB per platter should be possible - because this hard drive uses only three platters.
Speed and size, what more could you want.

Athlon XP 2800+ processors can't be overclocked
X-Bit Labs have posted up a story on how the Athlon XP 2800+ processor has hit the ceiling for overclocking and processor power. They are stating that the Athlon XP 2800+’s 2250Mhz frequency is very close to the highest core-clock the core can function at and that overclocking is next to useless as only an extra 77Mhz can be extracted from the core. Here's the core of the article:
Unfortunately for AMD, I now have to admit that with Athlon XP 2800+, AMD has reached the point of the maximal frequency the Thoroughbred can achieve. Our friends from OverClockers.ru web-site managed to grab a sample of the mentioned processor and tried to overclock it. To their great disappointment, they only succeeded in launching the CPU at 172MHz FSB, while the nominal frequency is 166MHz. The resulting core-speed was 2327MHz. They did not test the processor on stability at this clock as there is no sense to overclock so fast CPU by 77MHz. The whole issue from our Russian friends can be founded here (www.overclockers.ru).
We can sum up that 2250MHz is the highest speed AMD K7-family processors can achieve. In early 2003 AMD will launch its Barton CPU that will contain 512KB of L2 cache, hence, will be clocked much lower due to increased number of transistors. Of course, AMD can still add another metal layer to the integrated circuits design in order to be able to increase the frequency, though, I seriously doubt it will help the company much. On the other hand, we now see that AMD will hardly be able to provide a lot of its 2800+ processors this year without adjusting their manufacturing technology. Since I cannot remember AMD to tune their processes so that the CPUs were more easy to overclock, the Athlon XP 2800+ processor may become a “sacred” device for AMD closest partners and will never reach the retail.
So, unfortunately if you are hanging out fro the 2800+ to overclock the core out of it, don't bother. You would be better off waiting for the new barton core processors to start circulating.
