89009 2002-10-14 00:26:00 Just had a look at the beta version that's downloadable now at the MS website.
One thing though - search as I did, found nothing on any page to say what it supports.
I'm simply assuming that at last it supports Mpeg2 but even downloaded the white paper and yet no mention of anything other than broadly saying "will play mp3s".
Am loathe to downland and install yet another program without knowing whether or not it will do what I want.
Does anyone out there know of a freebie player of Mpeg2?

Cheers

89010 2002-10-14 00:40:00 AFAIK, You can download the Codec for playing things in WMP if it doesnt already come with them. Should support it by default though.

Make sure if you're using ME or XP that you set a restore point before you install, coz roll-back is the only way that I know of that you can uninstall it!

I like it though, Give it a try, see for yourself

Cheers

89011 2002-10-14 01:22:00 Under "Movie File (MPEG)" heading on the filetypes tab of WMP9 options it lists:

.mpeg
.mpg
.mpe
.m1v
.mp2
.mpv2
.mp2v
.mpa

as MPEG extensions it will play. It will also play DVD and VCD (but DVD will require either the DVD plugin for WMP, or a seperate software DVD player).

89012 2002-10-14 03:51:00 I use it as well, and prefer it as my MP3 player to previous players I used before (winamp and musicmatch) Its also very good as a MPEG player.

Has a very attractive look to it as well

89013 2002-10-14 05:04:00 I like the abiblity to play from the taskbar in XP, otherwise, I use Sasami2K for Mpeg files! Chilling_Silence (9)
89014 2002-10-14 07:03:00 razzlefruzzle - downloaded and installed MP9 hoping (and expecting?) it to support Mpeg2 if not by default but perhaps download a plug in - but alas, no play file...got this message

"The +€mà codec is required to play this file. To determine if this codec is available to download from the Web, click Web Help."

And no, the download isn't available. The link goes to an MS missing codecs page, with this message: "Missing Codec. This page coming soon."
Again, extremely helpful!

I have converted AVIs in TPMGEnc to Mpeg2 (for svcd) and want to view them in a media player on my PC before converting using Nero to svcd and playing them on my home DVD player...but have yet to find any program that will allow me to preview the mpeg2 files on my laptop...

The conversion works well but I would dearly love to check the files before using up a CDR.

Suggestions?

89015 2002-10-14 07:49:00 falvrez,

why not try a VCD rather than SVCD then? Or perhaps you need a dvd player plugin to get it to work?

89016 2002-10-14 07:51:00 HI Mike

Better quality out of svcd is all...for no extra money it's worth the extra clarity.

89017 2002-10-14 07:54:00 I suggest you may need the DVD plugin for WMP to get it to work. There are some pay ones, but I found a free one somewhere recently (but I'm afraid I have NO idea where I downloaded it from - it wasn't a warez one, so nowhere suspect!)
