Press Start\Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Infomation- Double click Software Envioronment\Running tasks. It should be all Microsoft.

88996 2002-10-15 08:10:00 Your problem maybe to do with the amount of free space you have on the C:\ drive. Download Easyclean, run clean registry and unnecessary files.
After that run scan and defrag. let us know how you get on.

88997 2002-10-15 08:40:00 Thanks all,

I have moved a few gig over to the other drive, and its been stable for the last 24 hours or so, so i figure the stortage of drive space on C:\ must have been the problem.....

Hopefully i'm not proven wrong.

Chris.

88998 2002-10-15 20:44:00 Hey guys aren't you forgetting about the kernel usage?

My kernel usage sits at around 10% if i open a prog, obviously it jumps up while it loads.
If the kernel is constantly at 100% then that means new progs loading up are having trouble accessing the kernel, and would make the prog load slow, or could cause the prog to fall over.
? Do you often get overflow or protection faults caused in Kernel32.dll ?

I vaughly remember some such error months ago. I just decided to monitor kernel usage again, there it sits 100%.... I take it i should now have a serious problem with 100% constant?

89000 2002-10-15 21:05:00 BTW.. over night i have downloaded the first disk of Redhat8, i came in and all is wonderfully stable still on Vanessa, again (2nd day!!)

Got to make sure that C:\ drive thing doesnt fill up ..
... I'm sure there used to be a warning, but it was a polite prog that wouldn't write that told me, not 'doze

I think that with the Redhat threat looming, SuSE might be real easy to work with now... Tonight i D/Load disk 2.. maybe i'll have 2 happy computers.. Happy happy... joy & joy!

89001 2002-10-16 01:07:00 OK well while the Kernel usage monitor is highly inacurate, the fact that it is showing 100% constantly is of some concern.
1. Check to make sure that you have not added Kernal usage, to the system monitor twice.
If that isn't the case, then you are going to probably have to diable each of your programmes that run up at startup. Then put them back on 1 at a time, untill you find the culprit programme. Otherwise you are going to continuely get errors. Regardless of how much hard-disk space you have left. Of which does not result in you getting the messages you are receiving. Unless it is from a poorly written programme. of which in that case is probably wasting CPU cycle time and hence high kernal usage.

Usually when Hard-disk space becomes low, windows will report this to the progs and they adjust accordingly, either telling you don't have any space, or limiting the tasks you can undertake.
