89285 2002-10-14 23:06:00 and of course you could always disable your "public_name"@pressf1 address if you weren't using it. spammers would get more bouncy bouncy email than anything else, yet we would be able to use it! Clueless (181)
89286 2002-10-14 23:30:00 Another thing that lots of forums do and which we probably should have doen is require a vlid email and use the emaiol address as your user name. It is always unique, and guarantees you can contact each user if you need to. Plus when it comes to banning folks, at the very least they have to go and get a new email to come back. Some forums I've used even goto th trouble of maintaing/subscribing to a list of free email sites and won't accept a free-email (eg hotmail) address at registration.

Still, if we offered pressf1.co.nz addresses these could be used in registering a user name.

89287 2002-10-14 23:37:00 The prob with that Bruce, is if I had to have my ISP email visible to others on here, I would view, but not contribute to PF1 - no way in hell am I giving that addy out on the net.

Plus, there are plenty of free webbased email accounts available other than the well known ones (eg @varsity.co.nz etc)

I think the @ PF1 email is a great idea.

You can still do this, as a valid email is required to register is it not??? (Been a while since I registered) Just bloack anyone registering an email addy from an account that has been blocked.

89288 2002-10-15 00:07:00 Sorry Graham - I didn't mean your email would be visible. What I meant was that rather than your user name being the login, the email becomes the login. At the moment your user name is - as far as the registration database is concerned - the unique identifier of who you are. It is the element you cannot change. I was suggesting the email address becomes the unique identifier, as is done on some other forums or sites that require logins. Works much better for lots of reasons. Biggles (121)
89289 2002-10-15 04:14:00 if you're going to have email boxes which only accept email from other @pressf1.co.nz addresses. Why not just have a PM system. -=JM=- (16)

i was suggesting that as a filter option, it would mean that adresses could be displayed publicly and get no spam, but would not be that great an option to use for general email for obvious reasons... but your right, its not that far from a PM option, except that anyone with a pressf1 address (which could be done automaticly) could email any one in the forum, provided they were excepting user_name@press emails......

and another option might be @pressf1.net.nz addresses

89291 2002-10-15 04:41:00 Just thought for a second and realised that it's probably more likely to be done with imag or netnow address ;) -=JM=- (16)
89292 2002-10-15 08:06:00 trademe works like that. I log in as trademe@email.com and I am in there as my username. Works well, but email address is not displayed for all to see.

89294 2002-10-16 00:49:00 What about Susan B (I Think it was her) and her Fake Robo addy, or other illegal characters. AFAIK, e-mails can't have ~'s in them, so ~42~ is in the poo! Chilling_Silence (9)
