89068 2002-10-14 05:06:00 Today I was unable to get access to my own profile and the administrator profile. The message was 'wrong password', which is a puzzle as I have accessed this profile everyday for 18 months with same password. No, the caplock key was not on. I can access another profile that has no password. System is Win 2000 with all service packs and patches installed. I have looked for password files to delete, like you could in win 98, but couldn't find any. Is there a way to solve my problem or do I have to rebuild? ned8888 (2242)
89069 2002-10-14 05:13:00 I think you had an option to create a "Password recovery Floppy" while the password worked. :D:_|. W2k has a bit more emphasis on security than previous Windowses. There might be a way around it ... try a google search ... "lost password W2k" (or "W2000") might find a few. It's a common problem, and I don't think any microsoft security would be unbeatable ... but W2k is better than the zero level of W9x. Graham L (2)
89070 2002-10-14 05:14:00 Dependingon what access the other accounts have, Right click on My Computer
Select Manage
Go to Local Users and Groups
\Users
Right-click on the Administrator and go:
Change Password

89071 2002-10-14 05:52:00 If you do not have a user profile with administrative rights or an ERD from earlier (that you know the admin pwd of) then try this site for information WinPwd_Info (is-it-true.org)

89072 2002-10-17 00:34:00 Hi Graham, can't ever recall seeing anything about a password recovery Floppy. Did use Google for a search. Found some good info. Eventually deleted a file .SAM in WNNT and have ended with a computer that I can't password any profile. Not such a big deal for me though as my computer is at home and, apart from some use by my grandchildren when they visit, I am the soul user. ned8888 (2242)
89073 2002-10-17 00:37:00 Sorry Chilling, other accounts have no access to enable a password change. Thanks anyway ned8888 (2242)
89074 2002-10-17 00:54:00 Thanks Babe, an interesting site. I d'ld a zip of a special boot floppy that was going to fix my problem, but when unzipped it wouldn't fit a floppy!! But I did learn a lot. Tried the Linux Floppy one too, but it just booted to a linux partition and I'm just not skilled enough in Linux for that to be any good to me. So in the end I moved a file, (Imhosts.sam) in C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc to a floppy. That gave me access to all profiles but I was unable to set passwords on any profile. I restored the Imhosts file but was still unable to put passwords on. But not much of a problem in my case as I am at home and the main user, my grandchildren being sometime users. ned8888 (2242)
89075 2002-10-17 01:02:00 That's the kicker. Thats why I always copy admin user to another user as part of SOP on install. Bit late now for you but lesson for everyone else out there in Win2k and XP land.

89076 2002-10-17 04:33:00 The method shown at www.petri.co.il might work. Have a look at this tips page (is-it-true.org) too. Graham L (2)
