89366 2002-10-15 05:49:00 Hi

I have W2K pro and an iKeyWorks keyboard with a sleep button function.
It is really brassing me off - I can put the PC to sleep but cannot easily bring it back to life. I've tried all sorts of options but most require a restart or even a cold boot - in which case I lose the current work. I have made sure the STR function in BIOS is disabled.

What I want is just to have the sleep button disabled on the keyboard and power oprtions set to manual. So that I would do EVERYTHING manually - its not a major effort to push a button!

Can someone please help.
TIA

Ron

89367 2002-10-15 08:01:00 Personally, I never use Sleep mode. I don't trust it. Never have. I disable all power saving features first chance I get on PCs. They use knacker all power anyway and power saving just causes grief, especially with network connections.
Not much help to you, but I guess I'm saying I'm not surprised it doesn't work.

89368 2002-10-15 08:06:00 Doesn't your iKeyWorks software allow you to customise your hot keys? There might be an option to disable the sleep key in there somewhere. Have you had a look?

89369 2002-10-15 08:09:00 Duh, just re-read the problem. So you don't WANT the sleep key to work. Can I assume you've disabled all powersaving and the damn sleep key still puts it to sleep when you don't want it to?
I hate that.

89371 2002-10-15 08:21:00 I don't know if this is an idiotic suggestion - but how about physically disabling your sleep key, ie open up the keyboard and detached the appropriate connection. A bit drastic, but puts the key out of action!

89372 2002-10-15 10:43:00 With my MS Internet KB, I can disable it with the software. -=JM=- (16)
89373 2002-10-15 18:49:00 In 'control panel', 'power options' on the 'advanced' tab you should be able to configure what you want the 'power', and 'sleep' buttons to do.
Also enable 'hibernate' in the 'hibernate' tab. This will save your work, shut down and even if you can't wake up your machine from the keyboard you will be able to wake up from the power button.

Hibernating is easy enough.

In my experience, all you gotta do to wake a PC up is hit Esc, and then move the mouse, and on PC's that are brand spanking new, they're back into like in under 2 seconds. That's how it works for me at least.
