2002-10-15 19:58:00 | Using XP: I am running several programmes in the background (from start-up). On occasion, their icons will all show up in the notification area of the taskbar (where the clock lives) but frequently some of them are absent which makes it hard to "relaunch" them (would have double copies running if I went back to start/programs/etc). Have not ticked "hide inactive icons" etc. Doing <CTRL><Alt><Del> does not show them as running applications but they are visible under "processes" (i.e. they are running). Any suggestions on how to keep icons for these programs (which are in my startup folder) visible in the notification area? Thanks. Cheers, Peter

2002-10-15 20:11:00 | It may help if you could tell us what programs they are. Some programs have settings inside the program itself to tell it to display in the system tray. Others are configurable elsewhere. Mike.

2002-10-23 04:09:00 | Thanks Mike. Sporadic display of icons my apply to GoBack, some Norton applics, Windates (PIM) etc. Funny thing is that on some occasions most if not all occur in the notification area, in other cases only a few. Locking the toolbar once they are all visible seems to have no effect on future occurrence. I have NOT set the area to only display active icons so something else is playing up. Peter

2002-10-23 06:35:00 | Peter, The only thing I can think of is that an error occurs with Explorer (the Windows shell, not the file manager) that causes explorer to reload, and as a result the taskbar reloads. I've noticed that when this happens only a few of the icons reappear, not all of them. Mike.

2002-10-25 07:09:00 | It'll come down to figuring out what is causing Explorer to crash like that - and the only answer to fix it may be to reinstall Windows (which isn't really the desired answer, is it?). Does it just randomly happen? Or is it always one or two things that you're doing when it happens? Mike.

2002-10-25 08:50:00 | Hi Mike, Not sure it is caused by a crash since it seems to be set at startup, i.e. on some occasions all icons load, on others only the "essentials?" like Norton Sytem Doctor and rest of the suite (Sytemworks), Norton AV, Zonealarm basically. On rear occasions do I get my other progs which run in the background like a PIM programme, GoBack etc. Definitely would like to avoid reinstalling XP. It is a nuisance not having some of the icons showing but having to reinstall would take me days with all the software I run. Peter

2002-11-15 06:17:00 | Follow up for those using Norton Utilities 2002. Have since found out that Icons not showing in notification area taskbar XP is more than likely associated with Norton System Doctor loading. For unknown reasons System Doctor takes a long time to load. If other programs are loaded at the same time, their icon does not show up. Have since removed things such as ZoneAlarm and Netmonitor from startup, and start those using a batch file (BatchRun). This seems to have addressed the issue and all icons are visible. | PDentener (1821) | |
