89439 2002-10-15 07:58:00 Anyone have any good ideas for a quiet fan for my Athlon 1.1 CPU. I've seen a lot of ads for fans but not everyone tells me wether the fan is for Socket A or not. Plus others experiences are helpful.

89440 2002-10-15 08:01:00 what heatsink do you have to attach it to?? tweak'e (174)
89441 2002-10-15 08:08:00 just the standard heatsink that came with the cpu. I don't mind having to get another hsk if necessary, bit I'm not overclocking. [ Would like to, but feeding the hungy mouths has a higher priority right now]. ~42~ (2034)
89442 2002-10-15 08:27:00 Its a problem with the faster CPUs, the fans they need get quite intrusive.

My standby PIII 667 PC had a noisy cowl housed fan extracting right above the CPU. I replaced it with a concentric circular finned heatsink and fan unit and it is very quiet. Mine was ex DSE, rated at 1 GHz PIII use.

My main PC is a P4, 2 Ghz, with no less than 6 fans (3 case, 1 PSU, 1 CPU, 1 graphics). I solved it by fitting a controller unit in a spare 5.25 bay. It only brings on the case fans when the temp reaches the set point (presently 35 degrees) and so far it has stayed below it. I dont control the CPU or graphics fans.

An expensive option but necessary if you spend all day at the PC.

89443 2002-10-15 08:34:00 firstly make sure its the cpu making the noise.

a better heatsink fitted with a large slowmoving fan would be the best option(eg 80mm fan). DON'T get a heatsink with very fine fins. these need high speed fans to work.

also check the case. side vents can let the noise of the cpu heatsink fan out.

89444 2002-10-15 08:41:00 I,ve only got 3 fans [cpu, psu and graphics] I'll keep the controller idea in mind and at some stage in the future there will case fans for the extra HDD's [to practise with RAID]. This is worrysome as 'Blue Haze' is noisy enough now.

89445 2002-10-15 08:45:00 Have a look here:

God Thats huge. if it dosn't work go to tomshardware.com and search for cooling fans.

Seems quietness and cooling ability are at either end of the spectrum.

89446 2002-10-15 09:11:00 Sidevents do seem to be part of the prob. Ahh thanks for the tip regrding fine fins vs. avrage fins. ~42~ (2034)
89447 2002-10-15 10:14:00 Thanks guys/girls? for the tips. Seems like it is going to be a 'Suck and see' exercise. I have already installed another PSU which is supposed to have variable speed on the main fan but I have yet to notice a difference. I thought it might be better than the cheap generic PSU that came with the case. Having a poke around the web it seems that a Thermaltake Volcano 9 will do the job. [Unless I hace the 'dBa' readings around the wrong way]

89448 2002-10-15 19:32:00 I can recommend "Aero Cool" They are called the "Silent Tornado" When upgrading to a Duran 1.0 I had a listen to a few fans, and this was the best. Check out Paradigm PC's. http://www.pp.co.nz
