90008 2002-10-28 22:10:00 PC was rebuilt over the weekend. 2 minor problems with it. First the pins in the ATX power connector were slightly mangled - bad enough that the connector wouldn't gon on. I had to straighten these out. Secondly several pins on the board itself were bent to one side, similar the what I've seen after people pivot connectors off as opposed to pulling the straight up. These two observations lead me to suspect it has been a return at some stage.

Saying that, everything else seems fine. While I can't determine the revision number on the board, the BIOS date is 20 September. That's later than any 7VJL BIOS on Chaintech website. I haven't a clue what this means so far!

So, I guess, I'm a far happier customer than I was a week ago, but what have I learned from this experience? Well, several things. I'l never buy a Chaintech product again - ever. I'll never deal with PC Gear or PC Gear Dunedin again, and strongly urge anybody to think very, very carefully before lining the pockets of Cedric Spencer, unless you want abuse if something goes wrong! I'll never accept an Octools.com review as being impartial, it appears to be run by PC Gear. I'll steer well clear on the PC Gear company forumnz.co.nz the advice is offered as a way to get more sales for PC Gear and is not impartial.

I take great exception to that Les. OCTools.com is NOT owned or Run by PCGear in any way. If you would like to compare each and every product that has been reviewed there you will see that the results obtained are the same or similar to those that all the reputable review sites around the world have obtained.

Having said that, I am glad that your board is working correctly now. Considering that those of us who initially bought the 7VJL *APOGEE* (The Summit was never purported to have any support for 166 at ALL) didn't even know about the 166mhz, 1/5 PCI divider (333mhz FSB Athlon chips hadn't been announced yet) and that it was never advertised to support it anyway (other than mention of the jumper in the manual) I guess you and all others that have had the board replaced should be pretty happy about the whole situation :)

If I've learnt something myself from this whole mess it's probably not to go jumping in yelling things and bringing up the Fair Trading Act when a few friendly emails would properly work a whole lot better.

I also noted that this months PCWorld has an article about that very issue. From everything I've read and heard, PCGear did not break the act in any way throughout this whole episode.

Have fun with your Apogee though :)

90010 2002-10-29 01:45:00 Madmax, I made my assumption of octools being owned by PCGear because I believe taht Ramil Tranquilino works for PC Gear and is on the contacts list of octools. Also, screwtop (aka Cderic) commented (to you if my memory serves me correctly) "not to bite the hand that feeds you" during one of his tirades on the forumnz thread. A natural assumption, I think. I still feel that PC Gear has some form of control over octools and it will not feature in my favorites list for that reason.

I'm not going to get into another discussion about whether the 7VJL was advertised as having 166mhz or not - I know what I read on Chaintechs website.

FYI I didn't "go jumping in yelling things", I'd sent several emails to PC Gear over several weeks and monitored the thread on forumnz for several days before deciding that someone needed to point out our rights. I still believe that Cedric trampled all over them without any interest in customer service. The Consumer Garauntees Act (I never mentioned the Fair trading Act, which I don't think applies in this case) was designed to protect us, the consumer, from this type of oppresive bullying by retailers, distributers and importers. As for the article in PC World (NZ PC World?) I'll look forward to reading it.

I certainly will have fun with my 7VJL now that I've finally got what I paid for! I hope that you do too.

90011 2002-10-29 02:06:00 I have had one or two dealings with Daryl at PC Gear Dunedin . He has always been friendly and usually prompt with reply emails .

I have also bought a HD off him recently, with no probs, but I am sure there wouldn't be any if the drive did fail .

However, going by the response I have got from many people scattered over several NZ forums, merging with PC Gear was the dumbest thing he has ever done . If I ever have to deal with PC Gear Dunedin, it will be specifically with Daryl, and noone else, but I think unfortunately that avoiding the place altogether is possibly the best policy for safety's sake .

I took a wee trip to forumnz for the fist time today . I tried to ignore the childish behaviour, and the disgusting language, and actually read some of the threads, and succeeded, but it was no use - almost everyone there has no idea what they are talking about . I have seen advice given to repsondents which was completely wrong (not just opinion, but proper advice based supposedly on fact or experience) including from MadMax, although singling him out would be wrong as he seems to be one of the few people who do in general know their stuff, I just mentioned him as he posted here .

I will not return .

Oh well, I was warned!

Flame away, I will not be following this thread .

90012 2002-10-29 02:07:00 Yes, Consumer Guarantees Act is what I meant. Forgive me for the error.

Agreed in regards to not going into anything further in relation to the Apogee, Chaintech or PCGear, however I know who I'll continue to purchase my computer equipment from in the future.

Back to OCTools.com. Ramil has only recently begun working for PCGear. He has had his site for a long time, and because of it's integrity it has gained respect in the hardware "community" (Have you checked out his Submersion experiments?!?!). I will be reviewing hardware that PCGear stocks for OCTools.com from now on and I can tell you that I don't have any link to PCGear myself. If you don't want to read my reviews that's ok, but you'll be missing some (hopefully) fun, interesting, useful reviews that I promise will not be influenced by anything other than how well a product performs.

Cheers :)

Oh, and you can always email me at madmax@octools.com if you have any questions for me :)

90013 2002-10-29 03:02:00 Madmax, what I actually said was "I'm not going to get into another discussion about whether the 7VJL was advertised as having 166mhz or not". I believe that it's run its course.

However, I'll lend an understanding ear to anyone who wishes to discuss the merits or otherwise of either Chaintech or PC Gear. Cedrics treatment of myself has left me scarred for life. Will I ever be able to trust a retailer again?
