2002-10-16 23:41:00 | I have in the past recommended the above motherboard and the company I bought it from, PC Gear Dundedin. I would now like to take it all back! I would strongly advice anyone to think very carefully before dealing with PC Gear Dunedin or buying a Chaintech product. The board will not do what it was advertised to do on Chaintechs website. "The KT-333 motherboard is usually known to have a 1/5 divider if said motherboard is using the KT-333-CE chip. The board was also advertised as having the support for speeds of 100 Mhz- 133 Mhz - 166 Mhz as stated in the owners manual. The ICS 94228BF PLL chip is widely known to support PCI 1/5 settings. The majority of us signing this petition had no intent to purchase 166 Mhz AMD CPU when and if they come out, our intent was to use our current CPU or had purchased one specifically for the board with the sole intent of using the 1/5 divider." (see www.petitiononline.com) The board will not do either of the above. Somebody started a thread about these problems on http://www.forumnz.com which, as far as I can tell is run (or at least moderated by) PC Gear staff and.or owners. It became clear that PC Gear (the sole distributor of these boards in NZ) were only interested in passing the buck to Chaintech in Taiwan. Myself and others got pretty frustrated with this and reminded PC Gear of their legal responsibilities under the Consumers Guarantees Act. The response from PC Gear in their public forum was to hurl abuse and foul language (including disgusting references to sexual deviant acts) at anybody of demanded their rights. Even when it was pointed out that the forum was read by kids the were not deterred. The more it became obvious that PC Gear would not honor their responsibilities as distributor the more nasty they became. The end result of this was that PC Gear closed the thread and deleted it (a violation of free speech?) and banned me from the forum - my crime? Demanding my rights under the laws of our country. No bad language from me, not even a hint of it. Why do I think it was PC Gear? because PC Gear Company Director Cedric Spencer is listed as administrator of forumnz.com Chaintech response to the problems with the board is to send it to them in Taiwan we'd like to "modify your board to enable the jumper. We will enable the 166 jumper for you to overclock." They'll solder a bit on to my brand new motherboard! But it'll only take 3 - 4 weeks. I've posted this thread not to continue an argument but to make everyone aware just what they're letting themselves in for when buying a Chaintech product or when buying from PC Gear. As PC Gear, Dunedin said in the forumnz thread: "Buyer Beware!"

2002-10-17 00:26:00 | I have found the opposite. I also purchased a M/B from them that was faulty (not their fault as it was brand new) and this was replaced with out hesitation once the facts were estabished. Maybe it's how you deal with them. Don't know who Cedric is, but I have dealt with Daryl and no problems. Bye

I saved the thread before the deleted it so it's all here in all it's gory detail ready for Fair Go and the Consumers Institute. I fairness, Daryl is with PC Gear Dunedin who have only recently change their name from PC Gamer (who I initially bought the board from). At first the were happy to replace it. Then, coincuding with the name change, they did a complete about turn. The term 'puppet' springs instantly to mind here. I'm not saying don't use these companies, think carefully before using them. There are plenty of other companyies who will bend over backwards to help the customer. I've being using forums for over 10 years and I've never experienced anything like this before. |

2002-10-17 01:23:00 | Last time I dealt with them, was the end of July & they were still PCGamer. I assumed that they just changed their name - maybe not and they have new managment. Will follow with interest. Bye

2002-10-17 04:53:00 | I've never used PC Gear myself. But from my experience of what I saw happening with those Apogee boards I'm not going to deal with them in near future. I frequent another forum as well. They did a review and found that it was a good stable board but not recommended for overclocking. It ended up being a huge flame fest with all these people from the forumnz forums signing up at this other place posting abuse about the review and the reviewer. Saying things along the lines of "That's not how you do a review. If you give something a bad review you'll never get more products to review." Good luck getting your money back.

2002-10-17 08:00:00 | Interesting you should say that about the review JM. In the thread they got nasty with one guy who they said was on the staff of www.octools.com. He was questioning their policies and the motherboard too. They said he was 'biting the hand that fed him' and he should be more careful. It's also interesting that PC Gear and Chaintech ads feature prominently on www.octools.com. The forum link on octools website links to forumnz. I've already established that forumnz is run by the Director of PC Gear, the contact page on Octools isn't working so I can't find out much more about them. Seems odd to me, that's all. Gee this is really starting to sound like a conspiracy theory, I'll have to stop watching so much TV :) Draw your own conclusions.

2002-10-17 10:42:00 | Ummmm, I'm starting to get really worried now, except my problem is not with a motherboard. I had to calm my lecturer down this morning, who was going to threaten them with the Fair Trading Act. :(
