1316890 2012-12-06 23:17:00 I would like to ask for some advice on rooting and installing a custom ROM on my phone . It's a Huawei Ideos X5 (running stock Android 2 . 2 . 1 (!!!!) the phone tells me my device is up to date) . and as far as I can see it's solely that version, not X5 Pro or anything else - I have read that it is important I use the right versions for my phone .

I have been doing a lot of reading but still confused exactly what I need to do .

As far as I can work out:
1) Root my phone (using z4root or SuperOneClick or something like that)
I found this website ( . com/2012/10/29/how-to-root-the-huawei-ideos-x5-u8800/" target="_blank">theunlockr . com) for instructions how to root, and went over to the other website ( . xda-developers . com/showthread . php?t=1369453" target="_blank">forum . xda-developers . com) mentioned on that page and downloaded the USB drives . But I am stick on #3 of 'installing USB drives' as I do not see "other devices" in my Computer Management panel, only 'disks drives' - is that the same? The other thing is I see two devices for my Android on there - which one do I use? (and why do I see two for my phone??)

2) Get a recovery installed like ClockworkMod (however I don't think there's an official version avail for my U8800?) I haven't looked into this further as I'm still trying to work out the root process .

And then I'm not sure what else I need to do after that .
I guess I am a bit overwhelmed with all the differing information out there! And would appreciate some guidance .

I . e . do I need USB Drives and all that?

1316893 2012-12-06 23:22:00 Oh the other things I wantd to know - which backup apps should I use - Titanium? Anything else? caffy (2665)
1316894 2012-12-06 23:43:00 The only time Windows asked me for drivers (the Android aob drivers I think they're called) were when I enabled USB debugging on the phone. The drivers for the phone here were on the SD card I installed. I dont know if all phones have to have USB debugging enabled first (before you connect it so the drivers can get installed). But, I'm pretty sure I had to do this before I could root the phone with Superoneclick Speedy Gonzales (78)

It states official version 2.3.5 - is that referring to the Android version? I'm still only on 2.2.1

The instructions here are pretty fool proof :)

That looks good however the link to the backup page is dead now. What should I do to backup the phone's contents?

EDIT
Just read a bit more it says use Nandroid? - confused by this page (androidadvices.com)'s comment: "There are basically two ways with which you can create a backup of the current ROM with the help of NANDROID. The two options are the Clock Work Mod as well as the ROM Manager." Am i right in thinking clockwork mod can only be installed once the phone has been rooted? :illogical

1316899 2012-12-07 01:06:00 I would make a backup with play.google.com before rooting. Once successfully rooted, I'd ditch it and install play.google.com instead. Rom manager is a great app for backing up, flashing roms, and fixing your phone if you've stuffed up a rom installation.

Edit - yes, clockwork mod and rom manager can only be installed after the phone has been rooted.
