1293143 2012-08-06 01:21:00 I don't use an ad blocker as ads don't worry me. My question is are ads randomly shown and how do they know what sort of ads you would be interested in. Eg. I run a train simulator on my computer and when I go to the NZ Herald site an ad appears for an addon for the train simulator I use from a UK software house. Is this just random or what.

1293144 2012-08-06 01:41:00 They look at your cookies and track you around the web.

Thats googles main business.

1293145 2012-08-06 01:42:00 I had to laugh, I just started using chrome, I'm looking at stuff.co.nz and there is a side windows displaying all the items I have put on my watchlist at gumtree.com.au.

The bastards.

1293146 2012-08-06 01:43:00 No, it's not random - most online advertising systems will track your browsing habits, and if you use any Google products then your usage from those will usually be taken into account as well (because most advertising networks these days are Google's ones).

The above data is used to select ads which are likely to be the most relevant to you, and therefore have a higher likelihood of you clicking them. As Metla has mentioned, the main way of tracking this data is cookies, although other factors such as user-agent, browser capabilities, IP address and location are also taken into account.

1293148 2012-08-06 05:20:00 Use Firefox & install this add-on
http://www.ghostery.com/
Also, the FF advert blockers are great

Some sites wont let you in if you decide to block the tracking cookies though

1293149 2012-08-06 05:27:00 I'm ok with trackers. They'll find ponies, facebook, dance games, youtube and porn in equal amounts. Oh and university research and a bit of news reading.
Nothing wrong with that TBH, if they make money off it, all good. I'm still highly unlikely to click any ads, relevant to me or not. Maybe very occasionally I click one or two, but most of the time what's being advertised doesn't phase me.

What DOES **** me off is when sites play video and/or video flash ads.
Deviantart plays those bastard JWplayer ads that I haven't figured out how to specifically disable yet. I HATE those things. There's nothing you could do to turn me MORE off your site and ads than trying to force me to listen to them while I hunt the damn things down. Because they're almost always at the bottom of the page or somewhere.

1293150 2012-08-06 05:47:00 Get a HOSTS file from from here: winhelp2002.mvps.org It blocks most of Google crap as far as I can see, as well as a zillion doubleclicks etc. Terry Porritt (14)
