1316910 2012-12-07 06:03:00 Someone needs root? Quick we must get ready to sudo that Huawei!

If you still need drivers for the phone - www.mediafire.com

To root the device we shall use Super Boot (instructions included) android.modaco.com

Installing Clockwork:
Download - forum.xda-developers.com
1) Extract the recovery.img from the zip file.
2) Turn on your phone while holding VOL+ and VOL- (should come up with pink/purple screen)
3) Connect to computer.
4) Go to My Computer and Browse your phone to find the folder with recovery.img in.
5) Replace the recovery.img with the one you extracted from the zip file.

Installing a Custom ROM on the Huawei U8800

This is the Cyanogen MOD ROM, you can choose another one if you wish but this one is supposed to be OK - forum.xda-developers.com

1) Make sure you have ClockworkMod Installed.
2) Download the ROM File you want (zip file) and place on the root of the SD Card.
3) Make sure you have Backed up Contacts and Anything you want to keep.
4) Power on your Phone while holding the VOL+ Button to boot into ClockworkMod.
5) Go to Backup a Restore and Choose Backup. This will do a Full Backup of your phone and save it to the SD Card.
6) Once backup is complete go back to the ClockworkMod Main Menu.
7) Choose Wipe Data /Factory Reset, then go back to main menu.
8) Choose Wipe Cache Partition, then go back to main menu.
9) Go to Advanced and choose Wipe Dalvik Cache, then go back to main menu.
10) Choose Install zip from SD Card and select the ROM you have placed on the SD Card.
11) Once installed go back to the ClockworkMod main menu and choose Reboot System Now.
12) Your phone will restart and may take a fair few minutes to boot up.
13) Enjoy your new ROM.

Source I pretty much copy/pasted from here. An excellent read. if you feel like it I'd recommend looking through - www.modaco.com (This is a very good site, read more for details!)

Now I'm not sure how much I helped. I kinda just skimmed through (a bit TL DR) so if that information help great, if not lets help!

1316911 2012-12-07 06:30:00 I verified root access on my Galaxy Y with root checker from Google Play. (play.google.com)

Hmm. I think I've screwed things up.... :/

It seems I have placed the zip file in the wrong directory - when I read "SD Card" I assumed that meant the external SD card I have - the 2GB one, so placed it on that. I didn't realise "SD card" also meant the phone's internal storage....

As when I got to step #10 - I can only see the files on the root of the internal storage and not the external SD card. Argh!

I rebooted to the pink/purple screen but I can only see the "Image" drive and not the SD cards....

Is the phone bricked or is there a way to re-start this process??

1316913 2012-12-07 21:34:00 Hold on a min - I found a way to mount USB storage via ClockworkMod - and now PC can see the internal storage so at the moment copying over the ZIP file to that...

fingers crossed!

1316914 2012-12-07 21:50:00 Sweet, that worked. Phew - few heart attack moments there :)

Now, I am unable to sign into my Google account - would that be because I need to set up another application-specific password for it? (as I have that already enabled in my Google Account) and then use that password to sign in with my Google email address?
caffy (2665)
1316915 2012-12-07 22:42:00 Internal/External doesn't matter for this although, as you have found the external SD is hard to mount/find in CWM sometimes.

By sign in to google acct you mean what exactly? Is the phone prompting for a 1st run setup and you can't sign in to gmail with your google password?

Sorry, Saturday has caught me off guard brain wise!

1316916 2012-12-07 22:48:00 I was told my username and password did not match. So I just tried setting up a new app-specific password and used that and it now works (i am signed into my Google account).

Now my issue is I cannot sync to gmail or calendar -nothing happens when I touch to sync, no sync symbol appears in the notifications bar (and yes I am connected to the internet...)

1316917 2012-12-08 09:57:00 Settings --> Accounts check google is there and the green sync icon is active *That instruction is for ICS/Jellybean so might be different for you

Here we go:
1) Open the play store and search for gmail, make sure it doesn't need updating. If it does, do so.

2) Send yourself a test email from your own account or from another one it doesn't matter as long as you have a blank email, now open gmail on your phone. Nothing? Right, onwards.

3) In the Gmail app right click/menu key (I'm not sure what it's actually called) then go to settings --> youremail@gmail.com then under the heading "Data Usage" make sure Gmail Sync is ON, if not. Enable it.

4) Quit Gmail, we must go deeper! Open system settings --> Accounts and Sync (or something about sync, I can't remember the process for Gingerbread anything Pre ICS sorry) and make sure Sync is turned ON and all the boxes are ticked etc

This *should* get it working. If it doesn't we shall progressively try bigger hammers until we get a functioning root out of this phone!

1316918 2012-12-09 10:24:00 Hi

Talking about rooting.
I rooted my Samsung S3 today to Omega rom

I downloaded the Omega Files from
play.google.com mRpZXJvbXMuT21lZ2FGaWxlc0pCIl0.
I get a list of mods that like the battery icon making it a green circle but after download the .zip file how do I install it?

It says under instructions "Install the files using your favorite method". and I'm like ?????? Favourite Method..??How... with what???

Anyone have any ideas?

1316919 2012-12-09 20:16:00 Just to clarify, rooting is where you obtain "root" access, or full administrator access to your device.

Changing ROMs is different, however usually they come "pre-rooted" as a side effect ;)

Favorite method would be flashing using Clockwork Mod Recovery, or TWRP for example.
