| 1292638 | 2012-08-04 22:34:00 | Despite living in NZ for 10 years I have no idea how much bodywork repairs cost on a vehicle hence the reason to ask. Cost of paint per litre, sundries and stuff like that, would be stupid to claim for a Door Panel thats been pushed in for example if thats going to write off a vehicle. I know that Cars fitted with Airbags that deploy with little other damge get written off often because the Airbags cost around $3500. Pretty much you stuffed if the airbag deploys. | coldfront (15814) | ||
| 1292639 | 2012-08-04 22:39:00 | I only have comprehensive insurance on cars that are worth more than $5000. Below that I have 3rd party. For instance, I have a Honda US Wagon at the moment. In the event of it being badly damaged I can buy another for $2500 and build a good one out of the two. I am sort of in that postion myself at the moment with access to a couple of Donor Cars. One the reasons I asked the question. With money getting tight getting the right value for money is becoming important otherwise I would not bother with insurance at all. Which will no doubt start a few people of on the importance of insurance. 10 years with out a claim supports that! |

| 1292640 | 2012-08-05 00:13:00 | If your car is not worth much it could just as likely die of its own accord and comprehensive won't help there. I'd never drive without 3rd party. I had an argument with a taxi 40 years ago. I could have just afforded the repair cost but the parts were back ordered and I was also liable for his loss of income for that time. | PaulD (232) | ||

Husbands spade episode put a 50c size hole in th bonnet. Panelbeater told him they'd have to: 1)Get an entire new bonnet from taiwan (I doubt that, too old for parts) - for a tiny hole? 2)Spray paint the entire ute to match it It's grey, not a hard colour to match. They quoted $1000 for this. He filled it with grey roofing silicon instead. Cost - maybe a $1. |

On the contrey of the cars I have purchased here the ones under $1000 have lasted several years. Your just as likely to pay $5k for a second hand vehicle and it die. Then again I avoid over paying for a vehicle. In a twist of irony the qoute I got from the AA actually has 3rd party Fire and Theft higher than Comprehensive due to the online discounts it offers. |

Now we are getting somewhere $1000 for a Bonnet repair, this is the thing I was trying to find out. |

| 1292644 | 2012-08-05 10:36:00 | My policy is to insure for losses that I could not reasonably expect to afford myself. So with cars you can't do without third party insurance, but after that you have to work out your financial situation and if you have enough resources to replace or repair your vehicle, if you haven't, you should get comprehensive insurance. If you can afford the risk and are a pretty safe driver you can save a lot on premiums( maybe put that into a car fund?) Our family have always had two cars, all older models, and mostly ran on third party insurance, I would say we are ahead of the game at the moment, also we haven't had to hassel with the insurance company, yet! | PPp (9511) | ||
| 1292645 | 2012-08-05 11:02:00 | coldfront Most modern cars are designed to collapse in an accident to absorb the shock. Seemingly minor accidents can be very expensive. Parts can be priced beyond belief, especially if the car is slightly exotic (European). Panel beaters quite often have to do some major structural work to get the replacement panels back on (panels to light to beat these days). It all adds up to pretty big bucks. I have heard of a small accident causing the frame of one of those little runabout cheapy cars to be thrown out of alignment badly enough to written off by the insurance company. Sorry this post probably has not helped your decision. | PPp (9511) | ||
| 1292646 | 2012-08-05 23:54:00 | My $1000 car, broken bumper(only) from car park ding. There were going to write it off rather than repair. No good to me , I needed a car. I asked the insurance co. if I could take it to a cheaper (ie not a ripoff) panelbeater They said no. So I fixed it myself for less than $30 |
